Down Hard! Atgatt saved my life and skin - RIP NC

Sorry for this but happily you are right !
I've been a couple of days in Vegas and rode on Rancho Blvd at night...(it is 95 isn't it?)
Man I fealed like I was on a racetrack !

Take good care !

Mesh gear is not bad when you are moving. It's worth it for the chance something like OP described happens.

I have a mesh jacket. Mesh pants might be OK if I could wear nothing underneath. By the time I have gotten on the bike in the summer I am wet. Out after noon things are unbearable. I rode a bit with the new Madstad windshield. NO WAY! It works too well. I was leaning outside of it to get some air! Sure looks funny to others.

It is me. It is just too hot.

Thank you all for the well wishes. First and foremost....yes; I will be back on two wheels. Been on 'em since I was six, no stopping 'til they plant me in the ground. But I know myself, and I will suffer anxiety for a time, and as someone said above, I will not ride scared. (Plus, it'll be an easier sell to she-who-loves-and-cares-for-me after I'm healed up and this is a little more distant in the rear-view.) Seriously, as I stood at the scene looking at my mangled NC, I was thinking..... "Now I have an excuse to test the Africa" lol. Yeah, got the shite scared outta me, and a not so gentle reminder that I'm no longer in my twenties.... just a hiatus to get my head and the boss in the right place to get back in the saddle.

Thankful you walked away from this.

Thanks for sharing this story, encourages me to continue ATGATT because you can't control other's mistakes

Africa would be amazing to have if I had the money I would go for it

ATGATT. Only way to enjoy our risky pleasure.

I am very thankful for your write-up. I experienced the speed of such an incident myself. There was a flash that I'll never forget when I said to myself, "I'm going down" and "that tree is really close", then I blacked out but distinctly remember two loud "thumps" as I bounced across the road and into a ditch. Thankfully I missed the tree. With ATGATT I only broke two ribs. There is nothing like realizing you have no control whatsoever over what's about to happen to you. It is sobering.

My Aerostitch Roadcrafter one-piece suit did it's job. I skidded and bounced about from 45 mph to 0 mph. I must have landed hard on my shoulder as the impact shredded my shirt and bruised my skin. However if I hadn't had on my suit and all the other full gear I would have shredded my shoulder and tore my head apart.

I choose to get back on the bike as soon as my ribs healed (6 weeks). It was a conscious choice to either replace the bike or never ride again.

There is a moment right before every collision where you realize you are not a rider or a driver any more, you aren't even a voting member in what happens next, you've become a passenger, or worse, a projectile...
That was the scariest moment of every collision I've been in, because the actual impact happens so quickly you barely have time to process it... but time seems to slow down as you realize there isn't anything you can do and your brain starts running through all the possibilities, you start to notice things like that light pole and tree that you are now barrelling towards that you never noticed as a driver. Then afterwards that pesky brain starts to process all those possibilities to try to figure out what happened and if there was anything you could have done....

The worst I've experienced on the bike is dropping it in the garage, more times that I care to admit (I really need to sweep up the sand and crap the cars drag in there more regularly) So I'm glad to say I've never experienced that sensation on the bike.
ATG ATT, I hope to never need any of the gear any of the time, but when I do it will be there.

Glad to hear that you walked away SinCityNC.

Thanks for the reminder on how important the gear is. I've been down a few times, all of them before I became an ATGATT evangelist. Thankfully I never got anything worse than some road rash. I was knocked out once for 30 seconds or so but had no lasting issues from that (both my exes might argue with that). I was wearing a helmet even though they weren't required back in those days. Sure glad I was. But I never wore any protective clothing other than work boots and a leather aviator's jacket. These days I'm done taking unnecessary risks (other than the obvious risk of riding at all). Hearing stories like yours reinforces that decision. Best of luck to you and heal quickly.

Snipped...

I have a suggestion: Buy a set or two of the large, two foot by two foot foam tiles and put them down on the spot you park the bike in.

I was riding without one for awhile then I almost I mean real close to rear ended a truck that's stopped fast. now helmet for sure.. all the time. thanks for the story .

Research has indicated the reason things seem to slow down sometimes is that when we are doing a routine task our brains limit the information coming in. In a bad moment when we face something new the brain opens up and takes in huge amounts of information to process the new situation.

Glad you are OK. Last year I spent several days in the hospital to include the ICU due to a motorcycle accident. Upon discharge from the hospital I had the wife swing by the Honda shop. She thought I was just going in to talk with some friends -- rode home on a new bike about 30 minutes later. Given time I hope you feel comfortable enough to get back on one. I also started riding when I was very young about 4 or 5 years old had a Sears Tote Goat. I am 65 now and not slowing down. So, good luck to you and ATGATT !!!

Had that slow motion feeling 23 years ago this month. The only time I ever acted like an *** on my bike, others may beg to differ, I pissed a guy off who chased me for twenty miles. Once we got into town and I thought he'd settle down he drove up alongside me on the shoulder and then drove against me with his pickup. As I started to tumble and everything started slowing down I distinctly remember thinking " I cannot believe this is happening".

I learned two things: 1.Don't piss cagers off. 2. If you do - have a bike that's too fast to catch. I did that many years later but didn't restrain my right wrist very well so I got the NC.

As soon as I got out of the hospital I went looking for a bike and ended up on a V65 Magna.

To the OP glad you are getting better and back on two wheels. Speedy recovery!

I crashed on Christmas eve 2015. I went down doing about 110 k and I rolled a bit but slid more.... approx. 70 feet on chip and tar. I walked away with some damage to my hands and a toe. I was wearing KLIM Latitude Misano jacket and pant, Daytona boots,Neotec helmet. softish gloves, as in no carbon fiber knuckles. The suit was trashed. The boots sustained very little damage.

I have since bought another Misano suit PLUS a Helite airbag vest.

I flipped my DRZ 400 practicing hard breaking.
I was wearing full gear, and the only injury was a bruised rib, so I bought Helite vest to protect the torso and neck more.
I have a Hitair jacket as well now.

Hello again to the NC community! It took just a hair under six months, but I couldn't stand it anymore and I am back shredding Vegas asphalt on two wheels! You know you're old when she-who-loves-and-cares-for-me busts me looking at bikes on the internet instead of porn!
Looked again at the NC, not sure I like the even more bug-like appearance of the 2016, but it remained on my short list. I sat the Africa Twin and while amazing, it's just too much for me in both price and machinery. Went on the hunt for a NT700 Varaderos, but the nearest I could locate for sale was 300 mi. away, and it vanished when I was truly ready. Began looking at and considering pretty much everything and this little bag of sunshine crossed my path at a song of a price point and I HAD to pull the trigger.

BMW F800ST. Been on her just over a week and have already logged more miles than the previous owner had in two years. It's an '07 and came w/ the bags and topcase (all lock w/ ignition key), sliders, anti-lock dual Brembos, on board computer, power outlet, new PR4 rear, three different windscreens, bar risers, and misc junk that he had laying around for it. I'm still geeking and can't stay off it. I guess I gave it enough time for my crash anxiety to pass, as I've remained pretty solid, even in heavy traffic.

Now, if y'all don't mind, I'd like to keep hanging around here and contributing as I have come to really enjoy this board and all you happy two-wheeled fools :).

Again, thank you all for your well wishes, and while I no longer have the NC, I will be around.

-Don

Sweet new BMW. I had a BMW K1200 for years. I hope you have many years of enjoyment on the your F800. That's an awesome little parallel twin. The new one puts out 85 HP. Not sure what the 2007 puts out but I've know a few people with the bike you bought and they loved them. Glad you are feeling better as well. It is possible to recover from a bad crash and eventually the mental part will get back to normal.

Glad you are back on the saddle and this looks like a nice comfy one!

I'd like to keep hanging around here and contributing

If no bother please give us a more detailed comparison between the two bikes when time feels right.
Also have a proper google-around for the Beemer's final drive specifics as I had been reading it is fuss free as long as the right tension is properly set (critical) and maintained and replacement mileage limits are not abused.
