Clutch went out!

I'm curious if the clutch used in the NC700 is also used in any other Honda motorcycle and if so, which ones. Overall, Honda did a great job at reducing production costs of the Honda NC700 without sacrificing quality. Maybe they just went a little to cheap with the clutch.

The list makes me wonder if the clutch is designed to handle the large amount of torque that the NC rides... Though maybe it doesn't matter at all.

Again, time will tell (and even if the clutch only lasts 50K miles it's not a deal breaker...)

Mostly I'm just watching to see what problems I can expect with the bike going forward, big thanks to all of you guys who are putting 50K miles on your bike so quickly so I can can have some idea of what to expect in ~40k miles... also a big thanks to every one who has replaced their tires, chains, sprockets, and any other wear items I'm missing (I haven't read about many brake jobs yet though... I guess when you are putting 50K on in 2 years you don't have time to stop) already and posted about it on the forums, gives me a better idea of when I can be expecting... (so far a bit of time and money around ~16K for tires, chains, sprockets, valve adjustments, etc.)
 
I use Barnett clutch for my sportster too and I confirm that is great material for engine with big torque (and some wheel up :eek:)
 
OK then, back to the NC700 clutch replacement topic....:eek:
I have heard, seen and read that on quite a few bikes, you can actually replace the clutch WITHOUT draining the oil by simply gently laying the bike down on the opposite side as the clutch. Now the oil is all on the far side of the case and none will leak out.
Will this work on the NC?

I don't know if this will work with the NC but on some bikes (like my old VTX1800) if you rolled the bike tires onto a 2x6 (or any 2x lumber) and then rested it on the kickstand normally (on the floor/ground) , it would increase the bike lean enough that you could get to the clutch without losing any oil. Seems like a better thing to try than actually laying the bike on its side.

I have a Suzuki 800cc Intruder. It's a well known fact that the clutch springs are week for that model. Most clutch failures are because of these weak springs. When taken apart the clutch plates usually look good, and some owners don't even replace them. This bike was in production for over 20 years, and the problem still exists. They're aftermarket springs that are available for the Suzuki.

That was also the case with the Honda VTX1800. Replacing the stock clutch springs with stiffer Barnett springs quickly became a "preventative" measure rather than waiting for the clutch to start slipping which it would do on most bikes far before the clutch plates actually wore out.
 
OCR, I assume you have replaced your clutch by now.

When you where in there, did you see any reason why our clutches are so noisy at idle?

Probably because it's not engaged and the plates can move quite a bit.

Fyi, for what it's worth, I've never gotten the life out of an EBC clutch that I felt I should. They always wear faster for me. Result? I run OEM clutches with heavier springs.
 
The noise you are referring to is natural with all bikes. When riding all is held tight together by the clutch springs. When you pull the clutch in with the clutch leaver you are pushing (compressing) the springs inward, this makes engine disengage with the transmission. At this point the clutch plates are in the clutch basket and are just free spinning. That free spinning is the noise you hear. If these clutch plates are free spinning when the clutch leaver is released, then your clutch plates are wore out. The engine is running perfect, and the transmission is working perfect, but they just are making contact with each other. Sort of like a husband and a wife, when all is held tight together popping the clutch makes the wonderful wheelies stand straight up, but when the plates wear out you ain't going no where fast.

My noise is the opposite, when I pull in the clutch all is (reasonably) quiet. It is when the clutch lever is out, in neutral, that it makes more noise.
 
[Should anyone be able to find where I can get this Honda side cover gasket please let me know where!]

The clutch side cover on my 2010 NT700V uses Hondabond in place of a gasket so I'd assume the NC700 is the same.
