On the way home today I stopped at El Faro Memorial at Dames Point Park on the north bank of the St. Johns River. With 33 souls on board the El Faro was lost in late season Hurricane Joaquin in 2015. The El Faro was home ported in Jacksonville and she departed on her last voyage about 1/2 mile east of this park. While I was reflecting on the loss the 590' gasoline tanker M/V Histria Atlas transited under the 175' high Dames Point bridge as it headed for sea, possibly bound for a cargo of gas & diesel at a Caribbean refinery after a stop in Port Everglades, Miami. Florida has no pipelines to the gasoline producing states of LA and TX and is dependent on ships and barges for fuel supplies. There are several fuel off-loading depots within 5 miles of this park.

If you are interested click on the ship locator and then on ship position:

I washed the bugs and gravel dust off the NC, then changed the engine oil at 64,011 miles. The oil I removed had an unusual history. I had changed the oil on schedule at 48,000 miles. Then at 51,000, I was about to head out on a trip to Newfoundland of a distance expected to be over 6,000 miles. So I drained the oil and put it in a clean oil jug. I installed new oil and ran it 8000 miles. Then I drained that at 59,000 miles and reinstalled the old oil that still had 5000 miles life left. Now here we are with new oil and back on the normal 8000 mile intervals. Next oil change at 72K, next oil filter at 80K, so the bike is good for awhile.

BTW, I‘m going to continue my long term spark plug test, with the originals still in place. Next time I check valve clearances, I‘ll check the gap on those plugs.

My 73rd birthday....18th day of riding this month, 123rd this year, a 99 miler out for lunch and a stop at the lake with my brother and buddy Jimmy. Will try and post some pics later.

Went over 6500 miles for the year and topped 5,000 miles on the Shinkos I put on January 21st. Might be another thou left in them. Have a set of Pirelli Angel GT's in the garage ready for when the Shinkos are toast.

Yes, happy birthday !

Happy Birthday for the second time today...

The blue NC750X has the saddlebags installed backwards. The "flat" side goes forward and the pointy end goes aft. I have never seen them on a bike backwards but I guess it is possible to bolt on the lower attachment fitting pointing the wrong way then still clip the bag onto the bike.

I never thought about that before but from what I can make out in the photo, the side cases actually might look better installed backwards. The base seems more horizontal rather than significantly upswept rearward. But then maybe the sculptured medial side of the case doesn’t match up with the wheel and such. (I never cared for the look of the OEM accessory side cases. They look like they were designed for a different bike but then just slapped on the NC. Why do the raised panel ridges on the side cases not align with those on the top case?).

Y

You need a machine gun mount. 20-30mm cannon would be better!
;)
Well after considering how this thread is going I need to sum it all up.

The caterpillar mods on the NC 750 will require me to use official panniers turned the right way.

Since they will only hold about 14 pounds of ammunition each I'll have to option for the lighter machine gun mounted for the passenger to use .
