Extreme Farkling - Road Test!

A rider on Adv Rider, Radioman, had the spoked tubless conversion done and rode from washington to South America and the system failed in Colombia so he put in a rim strip and tubes and is now good to go. Tube changing is not that bad I had to do it on the Dempster Highway in the dirt, lucky I had a small tarp to set the wheel on while changing the tube.

What kind of rims? I would want a proper tubeless spoked wheel. With "conversion", I was talking about cast to spoked, not tube to tubeless. I don't really want to run tubes any more on a high-miles bike, but I would want a proper tubeless bead and sealing system. I carried a couple of tubes as backup on the Dempster and the Dalton. I had two flats from shale cuts on the Dempster but luckily after a few attempts, I got the tubeless patches to hold well enough to get me out. I made the entrance with 6 psi in the back tire.

shale cuts! the piece of shale In my tire went right through the brand new k60 and into the tube, found it in the tube when I was checking it in the water at 2 moose lake. Sorry for the thread hijack.

Ripoff!

Dare I ask, what was the estimated cost of this all?

o_O

OK, not for the squeamish, but I promised a cost tally. I expected the farkles to double the basic price of the bike (as was the case even with my BMW) and that is pretty much what happened. This is parts only with my untold labor hours at a billing cost of $0.00 each. But, you cannot go buy a bike like this on the market. I won't defend it past that other than to say that no money was borrowed and no spouses, children, or animals were harmed or financially disadvantaged by this endeavor. Now you can proceed to tell me how many different bikes I could have bought for $14,000...

 Impressive list...the Russel and Ohlins certainly contributed to that total. Seat and suspension are always worthwhile additions though.

Well at least I know how much too save! Honda reliability with ergonomics to fit the owner. Sounds pretty reasonable for a bike that could last many many years.
I have plans close to this for my NCX and a old crew cab 4X4 someday. Of course it will have a 12 valve Cummins in it.

I guess that seat isn't back yet or you would have been braggin about it? We're all waiting to see it, and I'm sure it will be great.

No, the seat and the two Bagster items are still outstanding, however I had enough info to tally the cost so I went ahead and completed the cost tally. I expect a shipping email any day on the Russell.

I took a long ride today on the bike and contemplated everything that has been done. The ergos are a great fit: lowered pegs, replacement handlebars, thick Grip Puppies. The Givi screen, handguards, and DIY lowers do a good job of wind management. In stock form I was happy with the bike up to 68-70 mph. Now I am good with it at about 10 mph faster. The suspension is becoming even more plush as it gains a few miles. I was watching the shadow of the front fender on the road as I went over some road irregularities. It followed the road like a phonograph stylus. I remember before the whole front end moving up and down. I took a washed out dirt road at a good clip and it motored through with a luxury feel. I guess that is the summary statement - that is has a luxury feel. The RaceTech/Öhlins duo has transformed the character of the bike. The front brake is a very real improvement. Two finger braking, and I don't often even bother with the back brake for lots of stops. If you can pick the rear wheel off the ground with the front brake, what is it going to add? The service guy at the Honda dealership adjusted my new chain too tight. I was hearing a whirring sound proportional to speed and I first thought it to be tire noise except that it suddenly appeared. So, I stopped and re-adjusted the chain. It had less than one inch of slack. I hope it hasn't damaged the countershaft bearing. How can they charge $65 per hour and they are not even competent for a simple repair? Even if you don't have to do your own maintenance to save money, you have to do your own maintenance to save your motorcycle! That is a shame.

The new radar detector bellowed out its warning a couple of times. Escort has it all over Valentine for anti-falsing. If you ride by the same grocery store door opener three times, it logs it with the GPS co-ordinates and doesn't beep there any more. And then finally it sunk in after about two hours of riding the back roads around my home...

Where is that damned Russell seat!

Beemerphile what color silver did you order? I see the silver options of "gloss" or "satin".

Thanks

Gloss silver. It is not an exact match, but it is acceptably close in my book. In is maybe a half-shade lighter.

Thanks. They look like a pretty good match from your pictures. While I like to look of the Honda bags I would appreciate the extra space of the V35s and they look good as well.

Looks are personal, and almost everyone who has the Honda bags is quite happy with them, but I like the looks of the V35 better. Also, the shape seemed to me to be more usable as it uses the area behind the mounting hoop better. The Honda bags were not actually designed for the NC700. They were designed for another bike that had high exhaust pipes - thus the unused space on top inside the brackets. I saw a picture of the "other bike" but I don't remember what it was. IT was clear, however, why they are shaped the way they are.
