How the NC stacks up against the Africa twin.

oh its a HELL of a bike to right by the sound of it its only been out a couple of months or so and things are starting to go wrong so its a good bike then Griffy lad.
you always seem to have problems with your shocks.
what you need Griff is a chopper you'll have no problems with rear shocks then

Just pointing out that nothing is perfect, even from Honda, and that includes the NC even in Kawasaki Green :p

I said I can live with the shock (for as long as I can keep it in adjustment). So, its all right for now and for my purposes is actually doing its job well.

I tried a Harley something or other years ago and that cured me of choppers, or anything resembling one.

You must either be exceptionally loyal to the dealer you are getting your bike from, or you are getting a heck of a deal on it...

It seems you could fly and ride to any number of dealers in other states where these things are laying around being used as door stoppers, lol

I would be giving your dealer some stick as to why you are waiting so long when everyone else has been riding for weeks or months already! :(

Like always the USA is the last to get any new bike that Honda comes out with. In the USA the DCT version with the Dakar paint is just about impossible to find at the present time. I have only seen one person in Califonia who has gotten a Dakar DCT. The dealer has called an offered me a manual shift with the Dakar and Silver DCT, but NO DCT Dakar has arrived at either of the dealerships I have contacts with. Looks like later than sooner.

sorry but the AT is just ugly a bike only a mother could love..

Haha, I felt the same way when I bought the NC700X 4yrs ago. It grew on me after a while, but to me, it's still not that great looking of a bike. It has served me well and filled it's purpose in the last 4yrs and 40k miles. But on longer trips I've struggled with the ergos, suspension and lack of power. The ergos on the AT seem to fit me better, right off the showroom floor.

Sorry about being late getting back to you!! Saturday the 2nd, , , yeah, , , I probably was!! I live in Dahlonega & am up there all the time!! I'm retired so I prefer riding during the week but do stop in on weekends to sit on the porch between routes!! I rode "Doublehead Gap", , to "FR-58" to "FR-42" back to Suches on that day I think!! It was the first Gravel I've ridden!! Even with the OEM tires the AT did GREAT!!

We need to get all the GA AT's up there ar some point!!

We're you at TWoS last Saturday with your Queen?

It's nice to put a face to forum members.
Loved what you already did to your bike!
I can ride on weekdays too. I haven't taken
mine off road; can't wait for some engine guards!

I've counted four AT owners in GA from different forums including my fav(this one).

See you, soon.

I'm waiting for the Touratech "Engine Grards" too!! The last few days I fabricated a rack for my "Nelson Riggs" bag!!

If the weekend is nice I'll probably get up to TWoS!!

Couple of pics from a few days away.....

There was an old 1100 GS with us. It is in the pic. It has 110,000 miles on it. The owner previously owned it and re-purchased from the second owner. It is still running perfectly, hardly burning any oil to speak of. Imho it is a better bike than the WC GSA that he also owns. I also believe that he is much more at ease on the old bike than he is on the GSA as he seems to ride it better. He was not happy about this suggestion though :D. We travelled in county Donegal in the north of our country and these pics were taken on the Innishowen peninsula. The third bike was a Varadero. It does not have an easy life with its owner who is a big man, and not much interested in maintenance, but it trudges on regardless.

Ireland sure does have some nice places to ride. See that you have replaced the frunk with a tank bag. Does the tank bag get in your way much on the Africa Twin?

Yes indeed, the Frunk is sorely missed and it is such a unique aspect of the NC.

The tank bag does not interfere at all sitting down, but it does come in contact with my upper legs when standing. I have become accustomed to it though. I also run the bike with two small givi panniers that are also used on my Triumph. They are 22 litre items that I have had for years and carry sufficient with the tank bag for a few days away from home.

Some pics to demonstrate

I fabricated a rear rack for mine & bolted a "Nelson Riggs" bag to it!! I've not found a "Tank Bag" I like enough yet. I have a Wolfman Enduro bag on my CRF250L but I'm not sure it would be right for the AT!! I do miss the Frunk but will struggle on without it!!

Touratech USA sent me a confirmation that my Engine Guards should be here Monday!!

I tell you I'd be lying if I did not say the frunk was a large part of me getting rid of the Triumph Tiger and getting back on another NCX. I tried a couple tank bags and a couple small tail bags on the Tiger in search of a solution. It's figured into my Africa Twin calculus as well.

Yes, I can see that the tank bag will be a pain when getting gas. I ordered a tanklock Givi tank bag, but even that will have to be removed for gas.

Have a look at this ....

Honda Africa Twin CRF 1000 Tank Bag : FAMSA E-Max > Honda Tank Bags

The one on my AT is from my previous KTM 950SM. With very little modification it was fitted. All I need to do is unzip one side of the tank bag and lift it to one side and the filler can be opened. The one on the link above is made by the same company. They are well made and robust.

That's a clever design. Glad you posted.
Now I can mod mine. Just have to cut out the circle to access the filler cap.
BTW, mine is a magnetic tank bag with the zipper that allows it to come off
and becomes a back pack with shoulder straps.
Handy during my ride and hike trips.

For some reason Honda sent a larger number of silver ATs to the USA. I have had been offered a couple of silver ATs, but I just want the Dakar DCT. In the USA the Dakar DCT is very hard to come by!!!!!!!!!!! I ordered a Africa Twin Givi XS320 Tanklock Tankbag and a Givi BF25 Tanklock for my AT. Givi is just starting to manufacture this bag of the africa twin. It should be on the market by the end of August, which is most likely before I will see my DCT Dakar AT model.

Love the bike a lot but when I climbed up on it I was scared. Another 5'8" 28" inseam guy and at full height it was hard to balance for me and I could envision lots of drops when I hard stopped the beast, compressed the front end, and it bounced back up. Interested to see that another 'perfect size' guy is loving it. I even lowered my NC700X about an inch to be more comfortable. Guess my solution will have to be keep the NC on pavement and dirt roads and buy a light weight 250 cc dual sport for when the going is rough.

Was the seat in the LOW position. When I sat on mine the dealer didn't even know how to put it in the low position. So mine was high from the start. I have a 32' inseam though and I could touch both feet with the seat on the HIGH position. They also sell a LOW seat, which will be even lower than the regular seat in the LOW position.

If you're seriously considering the bike might be worth looking into.

Just performed the 600 miles oil and filter change on mine yesterday. About to go for a ride up Sonora Pass, CA today.
