Well, almost free. The materials are Aluminum extrusion scraps. The holster came with the Otterbox for my new Galaxy Note 4 that I got a couple of weeks ago. I've really come to like these giant phones. They make videos and GPS navigating much better.

I couldn't find a U-Channel extrusion that was the right dimensions, so I made my own by fastening two 90 degree L-Angle extrusions together. I'm just going to dump a pile of in-work pics. Here's a link to a good montage song. Listen to it while you peruse the pics.

The first cut.

All done. Painted with black wrinkle finish engine paint. The surface texture looks nice, plus it helps hide minor imperfections on the parts.

The Otterbox holster has a really solid mechanical lock. I don't think the phone is in danger or falling out. Even if it does, it is still in the big Otterbox case, so it could possibly survive a fall.

I wanted the Otterbox anyway, so the holster was just an added bonus. Plus it is completely removable and can still be used as a holster and kickstand as it was intended. The metal was all scrap from work. All this mod really cost me was two nights of work. I would be awake all night anyway, so I might as well be doing something semi-productive. It's either this or bad horror movies on Netflix...

Nicely done Lou :p
I made up a very similar setup for my Garmin GPS mounted pretty much like you did.
However I ended up turning the bracket around so I could mount it using the BOTTOM 2 bolts on the handlebar clamp.
The way it was, mounted using the TOP 2 bolts, made it very awkward to get to the ignition key while wearing gloves.
With it mounted to the bottom, I find the access much better and the viewing angle is still perfectly useable for me.

I had the same thought. While I had everything apart, I shaved some metal off of the counterbores for the fwd and aft clamp holes so the mount can be inverted if I want to later.

I found an old license plate could easily be bent into shape to hold a phone by sliding it in from the top. That's worked for me for 6000 miles and serious off-road riding. It's never fallen out. The tricky part is how to mount it. I used a clamp and put it to one side of my handlebar.

Probably the ugliest mount ever, but I'm sure someone could make a prettier version. I have a Moto x that is also my camera, so no pics of it in there.
