Anti rattle spring location

BassBob checking in with another dumb newbie question.
Ok, so how/where does the anti rattle spring go in the front caliper
of my 2015 NCX 700? No linked or abs brakes. Have Nissin 2 piston caliper.
Yep, having issue reinstalling front pads, not lining up with the mounting holes on the pads.

The pad spring and pad retainer are shown.
You should be able to determine their orientation by a 'footprint' they left when removed.

I have a question in this. I read someplace that the pad spring was not necessary. Is that true? I find it hard to believe for the simple reason that it costs them money to engineer it, keep it in stock for a decade, etc.
 
The spring holds tension on the pads to decrease wear.
Honda engines are smooth running with no slop or out of balance condition.
Looseness is a form of out of balance, IMO.
