today i hit 5,025 miles on the dunlop trail max d609 from dealer

on the freeway going apx 85 mph i felt some strange speed wobble and not very much traction

checked the tire pressure when i got home, front was at 35 and 33 in the rear

front tire looked a beat up but not terrible

rear tire going bald

did some research - most people think these tires are shit and shouldnt last more than 2k-3k miles

i think if i wanted to i could pull over another 1k-2k miles but i'd rather be safe and get new tires.. what do you guys think ? milk these tires or just get the new ones installed ?

ordered a set of bridgestone bt 023 for $183 (no tax and free shipping) less a $50 mail in rebate for net cost of $133 , local shop charges $70 for install total cost $203

5,000+ miles out of the OEM Trailmax rear tire is very good. The OEM 609F rear tires start life with only about 60% of the thread depth of other brands rear tires so naturally they are going to go bald sooner. Other Dunlop motorcycle tires provide 7/32 or 8/32" compared to the F tire's 5/32". Lincoln's head on a penny is a good wear indicator....there are also TWIs molded into the tire itself that do the same thing. Check them on the centerline. I like Bridgestone sport touring tires like the BT023 and the newer T30. I think the 023s are discontinued and the set you mention might have very old manufacture dates but if they are less than 3 years old (a mfg 2113 date on sidewall is 21st week of 2013) I'd have no problem.

The Dunlop 609 that came on The rear of my NC700x was worn out at 2750 miles. I replaced it with a BTO23. The local Honda dealership changed it for $174. I could have bought the tire for $106 from Revzilla with free shipping. The dealer charges $26 to mount the tire if I take the wheel off. I usually order the tire online and take the wheel and tire in for mounting. I needed the bike quickly for another trip and did not want to chance not having it ready in time. It was worth the $42 difference to have them do the entire job. Changing tires is just not that much fun anymore.....
