Building a NC700X into a "Communter Bike"

That's not really a "comeback" when you consider the SR400 has been around for 35 years and has never had an electric starter from the get-go.

It looks a lot like the 1978 SR500. See!!!

I went to a Yamaha Demo Ride back on March 29th. I rode the Bolt, FJR1300ES, and Super Tenere. All 3 bikes has a "Flat Throttle Response", especially in "Touring Mode" on the FJR and Super Tenere.

• The Super Tenere has "NO LOW-END TORQUE". It felt like I was taking off in 2nd gear from a stop, when I was in fact in 1st.

• FJR was uncomfortable, the seating position was very close to a sport bike. The "Focus" on this bike was "Sport", not the Touring.

• Bolt was a "GUTLESS" Bobber. My friend's 86' 450 Rebel Bobber has more power than that thing.

I'm out of touch on these things but if I remember well an alternator needs a minimum amount of electrical power to energise it before it can generate power itself - different from a dynamo or magneto. If your battery is completely dead then bump starting won't work because there will be nothing generating power to create a spark (or power electronic injection). I don't know how the batteryless bikes are powered, never had one but there must be several options for creating start up power. Certainly with DCT you have limited options to get going with a dead or weak battery.

The alternator on many smaller motorcycles like the NC have a permanent magnet rotor.......so as the engine turns it begins to generate charging power. These systems generate full power all the time and the excess power is sent to ground through the regulator.

Large bikes like a Goldwing or ST have a "car type" alternator that does need power from the battery to energize the rotor turn into a magnet to generate the charging power. These alternators use a regulator to vary the strength of the rotor magnet to control alternator output.

I have a tool tube on my commuter NC. You think it would be full of tools but I keep them in the frunk. My tool tube is really a fuel tube. I don't know why I need the fuel. I just commute 20 miles each way. But a good chunk is interstate and you don't want to run out of gas on the interstate.

I keep $20, a copy of my insurance and a copy of my drivers license in the little compartment at the bottom of the frunk. I also have a key hidden just in case I loose my regular set. And a Madstad wondshield, Givi bags, led driving lights, louder horn, extra brake lights with a flasher module, engine guards, and a phone mount to go with my Sena Smh5-fm.

Moderator, was this enough to keep this thread in the mod section? :)

By the way, I know frunk seems to be the term, but I really like to call it a 'fank'. You know. Fake tank.

Sometimes I miss the kickstarters, but then I remember the foot sliding off and the marks on my leg.

just buy a used burgman or something off the Craigslist for 3-4K. very comfortable, beautiful, absolutely low maintenance, 2 options to choose from. and you don't have to buy any extras(which are ridiculously overpriced for this particular bike-NC700)

Yep, I still have a scar on my knee from my buddy's Suzuki 250. He didn't tell me it had a compression release until after I whacked my kneecap. I too would like to have a kick start bike again for nostalgia.......maybe a 125 cc.

Well we've covered the Honda accessory catalog, a bit about "shady" dealers, a counterpoint that some owners prefer to stick with simple basics, dealt with our lunch boxes and commute distances, discussed starting motorcycles with kick starters, touched on some old '70s models, learned a little about electrical power generation, battery capacity and EFI, had a review of some totally unrelated demo rides, and then jumped on the scooter bandwagon.

I gotta say this is the most general, any goes, BS thread I've seen to date. ;)

What oil should I use on my next oil change? Olive or sunflower? Is Mazola a good brand? My buddy uses Wesson.

Whatever you want if you don't mind your bike smelling like French Fries. Just be sure to replace the washer and don't over tighten the filter.

I was thinking maybe Olestra, but I heard once you use synthetic you can never go back. Anyway, they say it causes leakage around the drain plug....

I resisted the use of the word 'frunk' for a long time. I thought a contraction of the descriptive phrase 'well shaped storage trunk' or 'whank' for short was better but no one else went along :)

We're all whankers.

It is actually a bin, although if we want something derived from trunk then we should just call it a trunk, as the automobile trunk was originally just a travel trunk that people fastened to the rear of early automobiles. The meaning of "trunk" has diddly-squat to do with being in the rear; it is merely long association which has burned that image into our minds, leading us to feel a need to contrive a portmanteau such as "frunk".

If it is any sort of a trunk at all, then it is a trunk. But since frunk is fun to say and serves double-duty as a shibboleth, I like it.

There's still 'Crotch-Pocket'. I personally don't care what anyone else calls it. I call it storage and use it as such. It's pretty dang handy.

This forum does have a tendancey to get derailed a lot BUT people don't get to wound up about it and that's a good thing.

Just shut the Crotch-Pocket and ride!!!!

In our defense we usually answer the question before we get side tracked. Wonder if we have ADD....oh look a new oil thread!!!
