Torn between the aesthetic prettiness of a single-seat subframe and the functional pleasure that comes with taking a last-minute passenger?
BMW Motorrad’s soon going to have a saddle for that – and this isn’t your generic cover-and-go design.
According to RideApart, the patent shows a pillion portion that will be able to slide out from the main saddle itself, with the ability to lock the pillion in place, allowing for easy adjustment on the go.

The system is versatile, too, with the Bavarians purportedly citing that the seat could be manually, pneumatically, hydraulically, or electronically adjustable, with further potential to be able to control how far the passenger seat comes out.
As for what our caboose will think of this seat, we’ve got a hint in the wording; the pillion seat will be both “reversible and non-destructively elastic… so that it can be deformed, in particular, folded, when the seat adjustment device is adjusted, without being damaged.”

That sounds like quite the idea… now to figure out which bike would best suit the patent. The R Nine T would make for a funky silhouette, that’s for sure.
