One thing I've reaffirmed a number of times is that if you want a mesh jacket to be part of a multi-season or multi-temperatured day solution, is that the rain and wind-resistant layer should go on the OUTSIDE of the mesh layer. Preferably with zippable venting. That allows the mesh to still force air through when the outer layer is worn, if desired -- and the mesh jacket also provides an additional insulating layer instead of just armor. If the mesh is on the outside of the composite garment, it doesn't provide this insulation much at all.
