You don't mind $$$$$ crushed exhaust header pipes, cracked oil pan/sumps, and snapped off/punctured oil filters?

Yes, IMHO, if you plan on even the lightest off tarmac excursions, a skid plate will have you thanking your lucky stars, after that first unexpected: *thunk*!, and oil doesn't start pouring out...
