Looking for suggestions on places to ride out of Monterey. I'm open to anything but have already been up to San Francisco and north on 5. Maybe moderate distance say 2 hours or just over that each way. Any ideas? Places to eat would be great as well.

Ride south out of Monterrey on Highway 1. Ride to San Simeon, visit the elephant seals, eat lunch at Sebastian's near the pier by Hearst Castle. Or ride a little further to Cambria. Lots of eateries. Lots of beautiful sights.
Enjoy

big thanks to Dennis and Pismo. I accidentally combined both of your rides into one. I was originally just going to do the loop the dennis recommended. But missed the turn west so wound up driving through Paso Robles and having lunch there. Man dennis you weren't kidding that ride through the valley was incredible.

So here's where the fun ends. On my way back up 1 I took a hairpin a bit wide because I couldn't see the edge of the road due to the sun being low and straight in my eyes.By the time I could lean further into the turn to try and bring it back I hit lose stuff on the road and low sided into the rock wall. Luckily I was only going around 20-25 in the turn and had slowed further so probably was only going 10-15 when the bike slid out. I'm ok minus a sore calf, thank god I bought expensive protective boots, but I now need a new mirror and shift lever. Any suggestions? I plan on going for the spring loaded shift levers to not have this issue if this happens again.

Sorry about the lay down, glad you're OK. It's easy to get out of position on 1, the scenery can be distracting. Monterey Powersports may have parts and would be close. Next closest would be Hollister Powersports, great guys over there.

If you're around for the weekend, you're in my playground...

I live in Seaside so around for the next two years at least. I'll have to call around and see if anyone has parts.

Sorry about your spill. Glad you rode away from it. To bad you missed the ride through Fort Hunter-Ligget and the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road. Nothing quite like coming over the top way above PCH1. It will give you something to look forward to. Again, I mean it.

I hope you rode Interlake road into Paso. If not you may want to find it next time. If I'd have know you were heading there I would have sent you this one taht includes a back way into Cambria:

Ahhh, saw the "Washington" location and figured you were just visiting. I was just in Seaside yesterday for dinner.

Dennis has a few good suggestions there. If you're interested in going for a ride, let me know. We are in one of the greatest areas in the country for riding... lots of twisty roads with no traffic and endless riding season. :)

Also, southbayriders.com forums for more local rides/riders. I'm Racenut there as well.

Sorry you had trouble

Hwy 1 South to Cambria from Monterey has lots of curves, ups & downs, blind corners and lots of high drop offs. You can't really enjoy the scenery without getting in trouble, especially if traveling at a rapid pace.
Ride as a passenger, in a cage, or at a slow pace if you want to see the sights. Or pull off to the side for a grand view.
I would recommend the Honda dealer in Seaside, I have had many dealings with him. The Hollister Honda Store was sketchy in the past and now has new owners who are trying to capture lost business.
And please don't ride and gawk, unless your a passenger, in your future rides on Hwy 1. It's a serious road.
Hope your back on the road soon!

Hwy 1 is an exercise in frustration, littered with tourists and rental RV's. You either chill and enjoy the scenery or be very comfortable with the left side of a double yellow. Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Superbowl Sunday are the best days to rock Hwy 1.

Pismo, I dunno when the last time you were at Hollister Honda, now Hollister Powersports, but they have been a great shop with a stellar reputation for a while. Though they are clearly drinking the Indian Kool-Aid these days. The Indian showroom is beautiful and takes up easily half the store to display a few bikes. The Honda and Kawasaki are piled into another area like cattle to the slaughter. We still got the best deal on the NC there though and they have always treated us well.

I bought a Kawasaki from the Seaside dealer and they were great to deal with then, but when it came to buying the NC700x 18 months later, they wanted over $10K for one and acted like that was doing me a favor.

Alice's/STP is a great destination to hang and gawk. There's always at least one or two really interesting vehicles there.. some two, some four and once in a while 3 wheeled.

Hwy 9 north of boulder creek is fun if you get lucky with traffic. Also heavily patrolled.

But the Santa Cruz mountains in general are a world class playground when it comes to roads. Nevermind that we can play 12 months of the year. Very few places in the world have the combination of roads and weather the we have here.

RIDE ON FRIENDS!
