Crankcase number? Registering in Minnesota

Hi folks, maybe a Minnesotan or former Minnesotan can help here. I moved to Duluth this summer and today tried to register my NC700X. The lady at the counter said that in addition to the usual VIN I needed the crankcase number from the bike, that it should be on the side of the crankcase. Am I being sent on a snipe hunt? I see no such number on either side. I suppose it could be somewhere under plastic so I though I'd ask.

There will be a engine serial number somewhere but sorry I can't help you on the location.

Thanks!. With a flashlight I was able to just see it through a gap behind the front of the shift lever. Mission accomplished.
