The 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Is The Newest Member Of The V-Strom Family

Contents

Suzuki’s V-Strom line has been a strong choice for adventure riders for over 20 years. Offering lots of power, comfortability, and an active aftermarket community, it cemented its reputation as a great all-around bike. For much of its history, V-Stroms among Suzuki’s 2023 lineup have primarily featured a midsize 650 and a 1000 – in 2020, the litre bike was rebirthed as the V-Strom 1050, and this year the Shizuoka-based manufacturer added a new member to the family – the V-Strom 800DE.

Breaking from the tradition of V-Twin engines – the originator of the “V” prefix in its name – the V-Strom 800 features a new 776 cc parallel twin, which churns out a claimed 83hp and 57 lb-ft. Suzuki says this new engine platform allows for a balanced riding experience throughout the rev range. Tying the V-Stroms parallel twin to the 6-speed transmission is the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS), which creates a lighter clutch lever in order to reduce fatigue on longer rides. The new V-Strom also sheds its 600 and 1050cc sibling’s allow frame in favour of a more rugged steel one.

The V-Strom 800 comes equipped with a suite of the Japanese bike manufacturer’s latest technology, including a 5” full-colour LCD instrument panel, selectable drive modes, a traction control system, and multiple ABS modes. From a mechanical standpoint, the bike also has the longest amount of suspension travel & the most ground clearance of any V-Strom model to date, according to Suzuki. Fully adjustable Showa suspension is standard, with inverted front forks and a link-style rear shock. The Suzuki gets a 21-inch front spoked wheel and 17-inch rear setup, both wrapped in the extremely capable Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour tires.

Like the rest of the 2023 V-Strom lineup, the 800 has an optional “Adventure” upgrade package, which, for additional $1,650 USD, adds aluminum panniers, a skid plate, and an engine guard to the V-Strom 800DE package. The adventure package is currently not available for purchase in Canada.

In the United States, the base V-Strom 800 is available in Glass Matte Mechanical Gray, and Champion Yellow No. 2, while the Adventure package is limited to Glass Sparkle Black. The Canadian market V-Strom 800DE is available in all three colourways.

The 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE starts at $11,349 USD / $13,299 CAD.

SUZUKI PROTECTION PLAN

Suzuki Protection Plan is a comprehensive plan that covers all mechanical, electrical and computer systems on your Suzuki Motorcycle or ATV. Ask your local Authorized Dealer about Suzuki Protection Plan for extra peace of mind.

THE NEW V-STROM 800DE ENGINE

V-STROM 800DE’s newly developed 776cm3 parallel-twin DOHC engine delivers a fine balance of smooth, controllable power from low rpm and the pleasant feeling of free-revving performance to the high end.

V-STROM 800DE’s engine is ideal for the back roads. It demonstrates tenacious staying power at extremely low speeds, which makes for easy control on gravel and hard dirt roads.
This new engine introduces Suzuki Cross Balancer, which suppresses vibration for smoother operation and contributes to a lightweight powerplant that is more compact from front to rear.
Finally, the six-speed transmission realizes smooth shifting and improved controllability, and Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) helps reduce fatigue on long rides and contributes to smoother shifting.

SUZUKI INTELLIGENT RIDE SYSTEM (SIRS)

The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (SIRS) is a system that better supports the rider in matching performance to the riding conditions, riding surface or preferred riding style, resulting in a more pleasurable ride.

  • Bi-directional Quick Shift system (with ON/OFF) provides quicker and smoother operation without the need to operate the clutch lever
  • Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) with optional G (gravel) mode allows the rider to match the performance of the bike to the riding conditions to better negotiate gravel roads and dirt roads
  • Ride-by-wire electronic throttle responds faithfully to the rider’s intentions
  • ABS system with 2 mode settings + off allows the rider to control braking performance on gravel
  • Suzuki Easy Start System starts the engine with one quick press of the starter button
  • Low RPM assist helps maintain engine idle speed for smoother and easier starts
  • Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) realizes a light touch to clutch lever operation that helps reduce fatigue on long rides and contributes to smoother shifting

RUGGED DESIGN, NIMBLE HANDLING, SUPERIOR RIDE

The V-Strom 800DE features a rugged new steel frame that contributes to comfort, straight-line stability and nimble handling. Narrow profile seat rails are engineered to handle the rigors of unpaved surfaces, even with optional sidecases mounted.

FRONT AND REAR STROKE

  • The Longest Front and Rear Stroke Available on V-Strom
  • With 220mm ground clearance the V-Strom 800DE has more ground clearance than any other V-Strom model.

ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION FOR A BETTER RIDE

The fully-adjustable Hitachi Astemo (SHOWA) inverted front forks, with a long 220mm stroke, deliver a smooth controllable ride, while the adjustable SHOWA link-type rear suspension with 220mm of travel contributes to agility and stability. Additionally, the spring preload can be adjusted by hand when adding a passenger or luggage.

REAR TIRE

With dual front 310mm diameter disc brakes, the V-Strom 800DE provides the comfort and reassurance of sure stopping power and controllability.

FRONT TIRE

Attractive and functional wire-spoked 21-inch front and 17-inch rear Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour adventure tires feature a semi-block pattern and custom-engineered internal structure.

SWINGARM

The uniquely shaped lightweight aluminum swingarm has enhanced torsional rigidity to support the increased suspension travel and contributes to straight line stability.

KNUCKLE GUARDS

The V-Strom 800DE also features knuckle guards to protect your hands from the elements, a plastic under cover and it is the first V-Strom to feature a radiator guard, protecting against flying stones or other objects on unpaved roads.

Go Further with V-Strom 800DE. Feel comfortable going further.

FUEL TANK

A large 20-L capacity fuel tank means fewer stops to deliver superior touring range.

WINDSCREEN

Experience less fatigue with the shock-absorbing wide tapered handlebars that use a strong yet flexible aluminum material.

A short windscreen maximizes visibility when exploring gravel surfaces yet protects the rider from buffeting when touring at higher speeds.

SEAT

As well, the solid-mount rider seat is rugged to withstand the input load of riding on unpaved surfaces, and rubber-covered footpegs with slip-resistant surface allow freedom of movement and an upright riding position.

I will be getting a test ride on the new DR on Tuesday. Hopefully I will also get a back to back ride with the Transalp that I have been on twice already. Looking forward to it.

Nice bike. Got out on it today. As I got it with zero kms on the odo I had to take it easy for the first 100kms and then added some more throttle for the second 100kms. Its a very nice motorcycle and I got to ride it back to back with the Transalp.

Basically then I can mention some comparisons. Firstly both have good riding positions. One sits in the Trans and on the Strom. The Trans has good screen protection but the Strom has none. The Strom seat might be a little more comfortable.

The Strom has better suspension in that it is fully adjustable. The Trans only has shock spring preload but the suspension performance is still acceptable. Both bikes run well over rough roads.

In the useable rev range and especially on bottom end the Strom engine is significantly stronger than the Honda. I jumped on the Honda off the Strom and it felt very flat by comparison. However the Honda has more power higher up the rev range where it would mostly be useable on motorways and the like. It is much higher geared than the Strom so this would be part of the difference. There is plenty of scope to lower the Honda gearing though. The Strom motor is smoother than the Honda mostly. Neither have what I would consider a vibration issue. The Honda gearbox is slicker imho.

The Strom is significantly heavier than the Honda and it feels like that at times.

I had a very enjoyable ride on the Strom today. I found it possible to ride it very briskly over rough backroads and that again was while still respecting running in procedures. It has enough useable power in the right places to get an elderley rider into a heap of trouble if he wasn't careful or lost the run of himself. The Transalp on the other hand has a more relaxed attitude. Both these bikes are seductive for me and while I said elsewhere that my X-Adv had held off a challenge from the Transalp, it may not be out of those woods just yet.
