So as we all know, the NC700 is VERY quiet by other bikes standards. I have also heard that most of the sound reduction comes from the Cat, not necessarily from the muffler. So has anyone just straight piped the muffler? (removed the muffler all together).

Or maybe you are about to install your shiny new muffler, and want to take a vid without it to show everyone? :D

What do you think? Sure, it would be louder... but really? How loud compared to, lets say, an R6 with a Yoshi on (or any other "real" bike sound with an aftermarket exhaust?)

Quite - tranquil - peaceful - silent - calmness - peace - soothe - pacify - tranquilize - appease.

I don't believe the officer writing me that ticket will be that appeased!

Simple. Take yours off and then you'll know.

You ask, "What do you think?" I think it sounds good as it comes stock and certainly wouldn't want it any louder.

Take it easy guys...everyone has the right to like what they please. Everyone has der own opinion and shuld keep it too demselves. We are here to be civil and share info on mods. TCUGUY I hope thos thread dnt get shut down like the one I started about mod. stock muffler. Well to answer ur question Im running my bike like that as we speak and I love it. Some might nt agree but its ok dey are allowed to have there own opinion about it. Its nt crazy loud at all. After modifying my exhaust I wondered the same and went for it this last weekend. I pretty much chopped the can portion of the exhaust and left the.cone portion of the exhaust were that little cover by the peg is at. There is no chambers ...aka straight pipe. Ill try to tape it and post it for you so u can hear it.

Oh, yeah, a LOT louder. Regardless of engine design, what makes the pistons go up and down is exploding fuel. That shock wave has to go somewhere.

Are we riding Harley's here? Not all, for sure, but many that I sit at lights next to are pretty unbearable. Even passing (or being passed) is not pleasant. Next thing, someone will wondering if those darn German WWII military look helmets add to crash safety. (Sorry, couldn't help myself on that last bit.)

(I will note that have heard there are straight pipe (no muffler) advocates. They contend the noise is more likely to get the other drivers to notice.)

I cut a lil too much of the cone so is nt as pretty as i wuld like it to be hahaha but sounds good at highway speed you can barely hear it. At 50 mph or less u can hear it no problem. Ive had several ppl look over at me and shoot me thumbs up....which I never got when I drilled the baffles on the stock muffler

That would be amazing! Please do!

I am used to riding everything with an aftermarket exhaust, last bikes have been a street legal KTM 450 EXC with an FMF, then an Aprilia Shiver with a full Akrapovic carbon exhaust, and so on and so on... so my type of "loudness" isn't everyone elses.

If you say you can't really hear it above 50mph that would be AMAZING, more sound in town, no droning while touring - PERFECT!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post that vid/pics! :D

If you like it, that is all that really matters!

Sigh. Not to rag any more than I already have about the (mainly) Harley riders but I've had thoughts about them being irresponsible by infringing on my "right" to a little peace and quiet. I have the same thoughts about those who drive the "boom boxes on wheels" who seem to think those for a block around should be "treated" to their music.

Perhaps the NCX is not as bad as the Harleys but still, the primary effect will be at low speed/stopped when heard by the rider. The low frequency noise (what some seem to like) is generated after the exhaust as the shock from the exploding gas mixes with the ambient air. The muffler breaks that shock wave up a bit so when mixed with ambient air the noise is reduced. So, when driving down the road, all the noise is well aft of the bike and, the faster you go, the farther back it is.

Ummm... The OP asked, "What do you think?" He wanted an opinion. I gave him one. I see you are offering your opinion as well. Are you suggesting you should express yours but I should keep mine to myself?

Not saying that it isnt okay to express urself about wat u like or dnt like. I just want to avoid a big o battle and have this thread locked. And he asked if anyone has ran it with no muff and how it sounds.... nt what you think about aftermarket pipes or loud exhausts. Anywho.... TCUGUY Ill try it later today as soon as I get home from work. If you are used to riding a bike that can be heard from blocks away this exhaust tone is ntn compared to that. And for all those who dislike loud bikes and like the peaceful bliss of the NC im kinda with you there. I cant stand that super loud ear bleeding crotch rockets and Harleys ...but I do like a lil sound to let me knw the bike is on :D. a nice lil purrr that sooths the soul.

I don't even know where to start with this one... so your saying the noise generated from the exploding gases in the cylinder don't actually generate noise until outside the exhaust? Are you kidding? Try this, get a stethoscope like a doctor uses and put that against the pipe right where it comes out of the engine while the bike is running, and tell me if you hear anything... When your ears stop bleeding, let us know the results. Secondly, sound travels much faster than your bike can move, ever!!! You never get ahead of the noise it makes, YOU NEVER GET AHEAD OF THE NOISE IT MAKES. The only reason you hear the exhaust less is because the wind noise gets louder, not because you're outrunning the noise. LOL

Dude, your NC doesn't go 700 mph? Did it not come with the factory boosters? :)
