Headlight flashing

My daily commute is on the M20 which is the main route between London and the Channel Ports and tunnel these being the main link between the UK and mainland Europe. This means that there is a lot of trucks both right & left hand drive using it day and night. If one ahead of me indicates to pull out to overtake another one I always flash to show him that I'm either going to move to the 3rd lane or slow sufficently to allow him to do so. 99% of the time I get an acknowledgement either by a waved hand or the use of his/her lights

Over here, flashing your high beams at the vehicle in front doesn't mean "I'm going to pull out to pass" but rather "Get out of the way, you slow son of a bitch!" and is more likely to be done by a seriously bad attitude motorist a scant few inches from your bumper when you're already in the passing lane and fail to recognize that, yes indeed, the taxpayers did in fact build that road just for him. Whether the other lane is empty and he could go around is irrelevant to him. In fact, when he finally does decide to whip around you, he will most likely pull back in just a few scant inches in front of you and jam on his brakes.

Anything you ever heard about Japanese and respect/manners, you can just throw out the window if they happen to be holding a steering wheel at the moment. They're so damned foul and inconsiderate to each other that I had to stop watching the news ten years ago. I just couldn't take any more displays of human nastiness without running the danger of turning sour on humankind.

That was my experience on the German autoban back in the 70's and you knew they were coming at a very high rate of speed!

Flashing vs. turning off and on

As I may have said, dad taught that I should turn my lights off and on twice to signal the driver he had room... NOT flash them.
I'd prefer to blink my lights, but... I don't have that choice.

I'm with you now. Earlier i was curious whether you also flashed the high beams when on four wheels. Of course, in the U.S. on two wheels your options are limited.

A couple of points for those who do this in their cars:

1. Consideration and cooperation are always appreciated.
2. Cutting your lights is unambiguous and far more courteous than flashing your high beams.

I don't know if it's true of the US but in the UK truck drivers come in two types very good & bad. There seems to be nothing inbetween. Around here the worst truck drivers are those driving the local firms tipper trucks

Here in the PNW we have ALOT of drivers that come down from Vancover BC.Some are NOT what you might call
" skilled " and don't speak much if any english. We seem to get all of them in our yard here.

Oi!

I haven't been across the border in over 16 years :p lol

...and you should see the Wa plates going up to Whistler on the Sea to Sky hwy, on the weekends...

The flash to pass button that I saw was not like the old style yellow flash to pass switches

It looked exactly like your low/high beam switch, but it was spring loaded, meaning when in the Low beam position down at the bottom, it was spring loaded push that button down some more and you were flashing the light, the new switch even said pass at the end of the switch.

But i have searched and cannot find it anywhere,

The switch looks exactly like the one that is on our bikes as we get them from the dealer, only has that extra 3/8" spring loaded part and says pass at end of switch.

I saw it on a video for our bike.

You can see the switch i am talking about from the linked video at about 3:10 - 3:30 range

It is a stock switch that I would think we could get, I would rather have the trigger switch, but this would be easy to swap switches

Some SilverWing riders flash the headlight by using the starter switch (the headlight circuit de-energizes during the start sequence - same thing on the NC700?). The key to this working is that there's a "lock-out" (my term) in the starting circuit that prevents the starter from engaging once the engine is running. So you're tooling down the highway and a truck or auto wants to pull into your lane. You hit the starter switch a few times and your headlight flashes in unison but the starter does not engage.

I have not traced this function in the wiring diagram for a complete understanding so I keep my fingers crossed.
