'Round the USA trip imminent, rough planning done.

It is the unknown that makes the trip an adventure. When on the road you will learn quickly to handle the unknown. Don't hurry and let things pass you by. Live life!

Not sure. I already feel I have a lot draining my battery while riding (visibility and top box lights, probably 1-1.5A, spot tracker, probably 1.5A peak, my own tracker, possibly 2A peak, Tomtom GPS probably 1A ) and I'm adding the heated grips today. I want to be sure I will be able to start my bike the next day... And I'll be riding every day during around 2 months, often with no outlet to plug my battery tender into... And I just checked the vests, they are sucking 3.5A...

I'm sure a fleece jacket will do under my two layers riding jacket... and fleece pants under my riding pants too.
If not enough, well, I'll stop often and drink a lot of hot coffee :D

I wouldn't want to set out without all the electric warming stuff. Being cold is it's own kind of misery and stopping to warm up is just not an option a lot of the time. An aching wrist or migraine headache might well be tolerated while you 'suck it up' but cold has a way of turning into hypothermia, ain't nobody sucking that up.

If you want to pass through London Ontario I can put you up for a day or two. Detroit -> London -> Niagra Falls -> South from there.

I know, cold is no fun. If need be, I'll buy what I need on the way. Probably cheaper in the states anyway, even with the low canadian dollar, except for the stuff produced here.

Regarding going up, I really appreciate the offer, but I'll have to think about it. I was in Toronto and Montreal a bit more than one month ago - without the bike - and It's not like I don't know the place. This said taking another shot at the Falls with the new camera on the way might be nice. Still adding a few days to the trip though, which will already be quite long... Furkot mentioned 25,000km... in 2 months... I don't want to be running either, it's more about visiting using my bike, that just riding around... :)

I'll keep you posted when I get closer to Milwaukee or Chicago. Then I'll see if my timeline still makes sense...

Plus I have to check about immigration, because my current visa waiver may expire in December...

Not sure when the next cold day is. Tuesday and Wednesday were cool. Would have been nice for you to take a test burn to say Hope and check your set up. I was out but only for about 30 mins. Fingertips were cool which would have been offset by heated grips if I had them. Everything else was fine at 3.5 C(38F).

Spent part of the afternoon installing the handguards and grips. Still missing wiring, but that should be fast. And then I need to mount the TKC-80s... Another challenge... If everything's fine, I'll probably do a test ride this week-end or by the beginning of the week, to Hope or Squamish I guess. Can't leave before Thursday anyway, paperwork on Wed... Are the roads clean either way (of snow)?

Go to Walmart and get some hand warmers to keep on hand.. if it gets really cold open one (or a few up) and place them strategically inside your jacket... heated gear on the cheap....

I'm talking about the disposable Hot Hand type of packets.. they come in different sizes

Do you have a pinlock lens for your helmet? I found it made a huge difference in the fogging.

I highly recommend a pinlock for single digit temps. My commute is around 30 minutes and have had a electric glove fail one time when the temperature was 2° Fahrenheit. That was not fun but at least I didn't have far to go.

I've had ice form on the pinlock from my breath but could still see. Without it, I would have to ride with the visor open. That's not fun.

All of my electric heated gear has failed one time or another. Not bad when you will be home in 30 minutes, but could be dangerous on the road.

I love my electric heated gear but, if I were going on a extended trip in the winter. I would want cold weather gear that keeps me warm without electrical assistance. Then have the electric gear as a extra convenience.

It's your ride, but you could save some coin and time, by running PR4'S or other tires instead of TKC's since you're taking the interstate highways. I mention the PR4'S because the do very well on wet pavement.

I don't plan to do big highways. I mostly selected places I wanted to visit or go through and furkot/google built the path between them, but I will probably just take the road that looks more attractive (using my own GPS), and I don't want to spend too much time at 60mph on boring highways... Possibly I'll also go smaller roads/dirt roads when and if the opportunity appears, and 100% road tires would be as annoying as my dunlops in those cases... Plus, as I said, the TKC-80 might behave better in snow, should I encounter some.

The pr4's are ok on easy gravel and will go many miles
I'm hard on tires and get about 7000 on miles.

Already have the TKC-80s in my garage... not worth sending them back and getting different ones :D
Now I was about to change the tires myself, but it seems to be such a pain to find a 18mm hex bit for that stupid front axle... why not using an external bolt as everyone else, Honda?

Amazing. [emoji45] i guess I need to ensure my riding gear is waterproof LOL

Great weather to test it out now. My boots and jacket are awesome. Pants and gloves...mostly waterproof. Damp gloves and crotch from the 30 minute ride yesterday. Depends on your tolerance for moisture. I think if you going to do the big miles would be nice to find out before your in the middle. Can always get a rain oversuit or overgloves.

Yeah, rain stopped... but it's now dark... and with the wet leaves on the floor, low visibility... I think I'll opt for tomorrow :)
I don't mind riding a bit wet (just not dripping wet...), and I know my jacket lets water in at shoulder level (vents) in strong rain.
I think I'll be ok. Just wish I could already test the new tires...

Are you sure it is 18? My model is a bit different but I thought the axle would be the same. I use 17mm side of the Hex Axle Tool.
