Just got my skid plate in and want to paint it black. Do I just buff if up a bit and use a good quality spray?

Well there's painting it to make it black and then there's painting to keep it black. The skid plate will live in the harshest environment the bike offers. Rocks and road debris are hurled at it regularly by the front tire. My experience is that if you just prime it and spray it with your average black spray paint, it will be badly chipped up on the bottom in a short time.

I have Dale's skid plate in unpainted aluminum that I'll mount next week. I may just leave it that way, unpainted. But, I have the same question to the forum. How can we DIY paint a skid plate black that has substantial durability against hurled rocks?

You could do spray on bed liner. There are multiple options. But if you can spray an entire rock crawler with it I think a skid plate should hold up pretty well.

Primum non Nocere

Great idea! I happen to have some bed liner left from another project.

Wheel well spray should also be more durable. with either you will probably need to retouch every so often. Also note they are both a textured spray so it won't be smooth like paint.

If it's not anodized and really use your NC off-road nothing is going to stay on it !!.

Powder coat and bed liner all crack off, even if put on by manufature. I have found that Restoluem Textured Black paint holds on fairly well. However, I bend my skid plate quite often. So, I usually wait until time to change oil, then I once again straighten the skid plate and repaint the skid plate. Worked for 92,000 miles now.

I recommend that you paint it first with clear engine paint. It's great stuff and it provides a high temp protection layer that works great as a primer. It's dries totally clear and that's how I left mine. Then you can spray whatever you want on top of that and it will stick much better than spraying right on the aluminum/steel.

Let's see how long it stays black next year on the IDBDR !!!.

SEM in a spray bomb. SEM black primer/sealer is found in auto paint stores and other places around here. It is an etching primer which means it probably has a little phosphoric acid in it. An etching primer is much harder to chip off.
Put a top coat on it and redo at the end of each season (or like OCR does if you're OCD about it).

Anything that close to the ground will not last even if you're just a slabber.

I sanded mine with 80 grit (random orbital sander), wiped with denatured alcohol, primed and painted with rattle can.....satin black. Worked great and easy to re-touch. I wouldn't do anything too fancy.....it's meant to take abuse.

I used VHT epoxy paint on a frame repair of my last bike. Highly recommended.

The repair was exactly where a skid plate would be, and on a cruiser, so the frame was exposed and low to the ground. The paint worked great, and was super tough. Looked like new for a year up until I sold it.

Apply the last coat thick enough that it's nice and wet looking, but not so heavy that you get drips that you have to sand out. The stuff really clogs up sandpaper.

Denatured?? Can I use vodka?

NO! That would be considered alcohol abuse......you don't want to get a reputation around here. You are on thin ice with the reputation thing already because of the scooter trash you hang out with from Kansas :D

Actually, he was saying nice things about you at the Hub....like......."she usually stops and waits for me to catch up in the more technical stuff" That was in reference to off-road riding. It was in town that he seems to loose you....he muttered something like "ADHD Cocker Spaniel" or something.......we couldn't quite make it out.

You will have to show up next to defend your honor next year.

Thanks for letting me know that my rep is on the line! I sooo wanted to go this year, but, of course, the only weekend I was busy in April was the weekend. Perhaps Mr Scooter planned that way. [emoji6]. By the way, I have it painted. Can't wait to install it, but need to let it dry till tomorrow afternoon at least.
