I decided to buy a basic XM system and see if I could make it work. I bought the Onyx Dock & Play Radio + Vehicle Kit. I sprung for a better quality set of earphones (made by Koss) with a built-in volume control.

I plugged the power cord into my cigarette lighter & the other end into the unit to power it. Next i plugged the antenna into its port on the unit. Then I plugged the jack for the earphones into the "Audio" port on the back of the Onyx receiver. Paid for a 1 month subscription on their website.

A few minutes later, I got the activation signal. Bingo, satellite radio without any extras needed, except the good quality earbuds. No FM tuner, existing speakers, etc., are needed. Why couldn't they just tell me that when I called 'em earlier and asked about it? "No sir, that won't work without an existing radio." Bologna!

The sound quality is pretty good, and the volume level is good enough to make it worth listening to. It does sound a little "tinny", but I've ordered a mini amp/booster that according to most reviews, will give me better sound quality over the frequency range, and more volume than I can handle.

The booster I ordered:
