    8000 mile valve check

Well, there you have it. Anyway, i'm going to check the XR's valves, but i guess no surprises, the engine runs like clockwork, very good mileage, no strange noises. Lee, when you tighten the adjusting screw, doesn't it get forced upwards by the locknut ? I mean, there's always some play on the...

    Steering bearing

I had this problem with the XR250, original bearings were reported to have failed in off-road use, so i replaced them with SKF conical. I had to have them machined to 22 mm inner diam from 20mm (if i well recall), though. Old setup : http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/2967/dsc00187fw.jpg...

    8000 mile valve check

Most of the hassle Mark describes would be the same whatever the valve clearance system, i guess. Anyway my (very limited) experience is that it's very hard to be confident with screw adjustment, because upon tightening the clearance changes, so it's very frustrating. I really like the idea of a...

    8000 mile valve check

My very basic XR250 has shims, and i was told by the Honda mechanic not to think about it before 30000 km at least. And the DOHC CBX 750 had hydraulic. I think adjusting with this screw system is very error-prone, especially if there already is some wear, because then when you tighten, the gap...

    8000 mile valve check

Could someone explain why this nut and bolt valve adjustment system is still used when shims seem to be so much more reliable, maintenance-free and exact, or also hydraulic tappets ?

    First gear clunk question

Lee, that's interesting, since on the Ten there was an idle adjust screw (albeit terribly difficult to get at). So the FI systems are different for honda bikes i guess. Yes, the clutch lever has the recommended play. 670cc, wouldn't keeping the bike in gear during the minutes some lights stay...

    First gear clunk question

Gear shifting has become much better after i added Militec-1 to the oil. Really quite acceptable compared to the noises i had before. But, the first gear clunk won't go away, and it's loud enough to be embarrassing at traffic lights. So i'm wondering if maybe lowering the idle rpm would improve...

    Show Us Your Pet Pictures

So are mine, and i've had my share of trouble with some of them because often these are puppy mill dogs, and they're abandoned after the owners find themselves burdened with health or behaviour problems after the cute puppies grow up.

    Show Us Your Pet Pictures

Here's an old picture of our poodle Taffy with a baby possum we tried to rescue after our (many) dogs got its mother. It's very hard to rescue wild animals, they eventually die as this one did.

    11 weeks 6,000 miles - Absolutely Love My NC700X!!

I would also advise you to be careful, don't be over confident, that's easy with a bike that is so user-friendly. An over filled truck fuel tank with a leaking cap will spill fuel exactly where it's most dangerous, namely curves, an animal can cross the road at any time, especially if you're...

    Advice needed from experienced riders...

I like to start a mental stopwatch whenever something is running that i have to keep track of. I don't know if it'll work for you, but as soon as you turn it on, start counting. It helps me also for my daily swim btw, i imagine the second hand on a clock that moves one second for every stroke...

    Engine vibrates at 4000 rpm

I found this paragraph The motor itself is quite smooth, except for a buzz that's apparent at 4500 rpm, blurring the mirrors. Shifting or adjusting speed easily avoids that, though it would be better if Honda simply eliminated the vibration at that often-used rpm. Interestingly, with the...

    New Foot Pegs

That's good news, i have these Pedaleira OXXY - TORNADO on my XR250 and i love them, a good firm wide peg makes a huge difference. So i'll try and see if they fit the NC.

    1st Oil change

I can confirm that, was next to the mechanic who changed the oil, no need to remove anything. Even though the owner's manual says you do.

    Vibration/pulsing at 50 - 55 MPH in 6th

Well, maybe we can sort some things out now : if it's getting worse, then it cannot be due to some structural flaw, to an inherent design error. The same conclusion can be arrived at from a different angle, namely that some machines have the problem, others not. But, since the problem is...

    1st Oil change

Looks like something the kids made...if it weren't a sealed cartridge they could never sell something like that. There isn't much left you can trust nowadays. Lee, now i see why you said the filter I opened could be trusted...it really looks much better quality.

When you go over the 11lb. weight allowed in the storage tank - my experience

The one thing i'm not too happy about on this bike are those plastic clips everywhere, looks like they're meant to be discarded every time they're taken off.

    Maintenance schedule and oil changes

Maybe the six months period adjusts for the hotter climate, bad, corrosive gasoline (20% ethanol, next year it will be 25%), that's why i also add synthetic two stroke oil to the gas.
