Your tarp under your tent should be a little smaller than the floor of the tent. If you were to get a heavy rain, all the water running down the side of your tent would run down onto the tarp sticking out from under your tent, and pool under your tent.

I have a 2 man tent, so I can use it in or out of the tent. The mat don't care if I'm at the head of the mat or beside it since the valve is in the corner of the mat. Now the cot can be put together in the tent, but is a little more tricky.

I guess it depends on the mat your filling, not much I could get done in the 30 seconds it takes my mat to fill.
