Stale, I'm having exactly the same problem. Mine is worse with engine cold. When I see that Neutral can't be engaged,I rev the engine and that seems to fix the problem for that occasion. Like you I'll put the battery charger on overnight and failing that I'll try the re initialisation procedure...
