Been inactive in this forum ever since I got my bike. Just went for a 800km ride, and would like to share some initial views about the bike with fellow riders, or potential riders:

nc700_rompin.jpg

Have a few thoughts about the bike to share.

1) 6th gear is indeed overdrive gear. Once engaged 6th gear, vibration is reduced quite abit and engine feels very stable. However, expect no power available. It's a "purely cruising" gear.

2) 150km/h is going to be the comfortable highway cruising speed, with my height + OEM touring screen. At this speed, bike will still be able to have power left to pull away if necessary.

3) After 150km/h, acceleration increases slowly. Ending of power liao. Top speed tried is around 170km/h. I'm sure can go 180km/h, but the suspensions wouldn't be able to give you a confident ride.

4) Stock suspension is really soft. Comfy, but not very inspiring will cornering. During this ride, swapped with the Versys for a stretch of road, there's really a big difference...

5) The front brakes are really pretty good. Don't really lose to the versys double disc based on both tester... Though he think it's better than his Versys. :p So, those who think single disc is no good, think again.. The big rotor isn't there for nothing. :)

6) Will need riser for comfortable riding. But this is debatable. There's no stress on the upper and lower back. Just arms. But if put riser, it could potentially add stress to the back instead...

7) The stock seat really cannot make it.. Luckily I got the air hawk in time... Enough said...

8) Bike's power range is very different from other bikes. Most bikes are high rev, and riders are usually used to getting power at high rpm by dropping 2 gears. However, 1 gear is the max you can drop with the NC700.. By dropping 2 gears, you hit above 5k rpm, thats it. That's when the power actually dip... So, cant ride aggressively, adapt to smooth riding technique like I did on my ex-scooters.

9) FC is fantastic. However, if rev alot, still can get 26.8km/h. Otherwise, for regular hard riding, 28km/h, smooth commuting; 29-29.5km/h.

10) Bike's weight management is fantastic. It's so easy to push around, lift up from side stand (compared to the Versys).

11) There isn't a hell lot of power for 700cc, but what the range that it has is very use-able for general riding. I hardly full throttle with my previous Blackbird, which is quite a waste imo.

Overall, this bike really impressed me more than I thought having come from the Super Tenere..

Here in the USA, my suspension is anything but soft.
How can it be? I expect them to have the same suspension?

Hi whyzee

Nice picture!
Are you from Singapore or Malaysia? "liao"?

~Joe

haha. So, you have been here before? I'm from Singapore, but most of my rides will be in Malaysia. Singapore = Commuting.

Thanks for your great review, whyzee! :)

I have to agree with Crilly, my suspension feels like a rock! It's very stiff. After getting off my BMW F800ST, I thought the jarring over bumps was pretty tooth loosening on the NCX. The seat is very firm as well, but I think I can live with it for now.

I find my suspension cushy, and soft... But I'm coming from a PCX 125 scooter with 2.9. Inches of travel. I rode a cracked and potted old road for about 12 miles, it was like floating over them. I wouldn't even take my car down that road.

Nice picture! I noticed you have a stripe on the edge of the wheel rims. I really don't care for black rims, but that's the style these days and not a deal breaker for me. However, the stripe really adds to the look of the wheels. Did you do that yourself, or did it come from the factory like that ?

I think if we are going to talk suspension we might want to inform the group of weight. I weight around 200lbs, stocky but not fat. that would be about 90 kilos. My suspension is good, until I add my wife on the back. She weights about 120 lbs. and only then does it get a little squishy.

Nice catch Max! Exhaust looks different too.

My suspension will jar my teeth out on rough gravel roads. On pavement it feels ok.

I weigh 200ish.

Nice review whyzee but are you serious? cruising at 95mph you can get 76mpg (imperial) - if so mine's going in for a warranty claim ;)
Good point about using full throttle - you have to have a different mindset doncha. On previous bikes I have had I wouldn't have dreamt of ever using full throttle.

Jeez, no doubt...

Granted it was my first fill up, but I was kinda surprised in a not so impressed way, when I put fuel in yesterday.

266 kilometres, and it took 12.55 litres. That's 21.19 KPL or 49.84 US MPG. Auugh!

I mean c'mon! My F800ST got over 50 US MPG during break in, on it's first tank!

Will this thing really jump up 20 more MPG after awhile? Hmmmmmm.

With my "spirited riding" I will easily get more than 380 km on a 12,5 liter tank filling! Either you handle the bike like a xxx or something is wrong i suggest. :)

Pretty gentle riding. No full throttles, and 3-4,000 rpm for the most part.

Only thing I can think of are a couple factors:

-When I filled up, I sloshed a few sprays of gas outside of the tank opening, that left a small puddle beneath the bike, oops

-Maybe I over filled it by a little bit.

So, if it really should have only taken say, 12 litres, then that would equate to roughly 22.16 KPL or 52.12 US MPG. I still would have been surprised with that though, to be honest. I had visions of at least 60 MPG or higher straight away, even during break in!

Oh well. I guess I will see eventually what the real deal is.

Yeah, that's way too low, something is up. Are you positive the dealer put in a full tank, and not just enough to light up all the bars on the fuel guage? I popped the cap on mine when I picked it up just to make sure... Maybe they shorted you a bit. The first bar doesn't disappear for me until ~65 miles, so they could have shorted you almost a gallon and you wouldn't notice maybe.

I'm only on my 5th tank, but the worst I've done was 54mpg on a tank. That was in a heavy rain riding at 65-75mph into a strong headwind... The rest have all been 60mpg+.

With that kind of riding you should reach at least 70 mpg (us) in a very few tank fillings! At least after the first service at 1000 miles where the oil is changed from Honda standard "break-in oil" to a more standard slick version like Motul or whatever you got over there.

EDIT:
If you are cruising at 3-4000 rpm you can easily lower it at least 1000 rpm! Cruising is very well done by the bike at revs from 2000 and up.

After my fill up, the first bar didn't disappear for 90 miles. I also got shorted on gas, I think, because I only got 122 miles out of my first tank. I figured the first tank would be a throwaway, anyway. Also it might be worth noting that the recommended shift speeds put the ideal rpm's between 2 and 3 thousand until you get up over 60 mph.

You could get the rim tapes here: OF616 OXFORD 7mm GREEN FLUORESCENT FLURO WHEEL RIM STRIPE TAPE MOTORCYCLE NEW items in RoundAndBlack store on eBay! or similar sources. Mine are reflective. Plenty of options n ebay imo...

Nice catch Max! Exhaust looks different too.

The exhaust is stock, the only difference is the exhaust guard..

I think to get good FC, it's very important to accelerate slowly and smoothly. Maintaining smooth throttle is more important than keeping the speed low...

I gotta re-think about the suspension again if you guys think it is stiff. What I feel could be a result of bumping because it is too stiff too. Hmmmmm. let me trial and error for the next few days and see what I could get..

I think you are right as far as the tank not being "full" full from the Dealer, as I kept an eye on my tripmeter after I filled up this time, and I juuuuust dropped down to 4 bars on the gauge pulling into the driveway, and I've travelled 151.1 km's on the trip. Apparently, the gauge can show full, with as much as 90 odd miles worth of gas used up.

How that could effect a distance travelled of 266 km's and 12.5 litres consumed, I have no idea I'm afraid...

I am really curious to see what my next tank fill is! :D
