I've passed a couple of other cyclists since I started riding again.
I raise my left hand and move it side to side like a metronome...

they put their hand out kind of waist level and do ....something with it...
(I've seen that waist-high wave twice now)

Is there some special wave I don't know about?

I can keep time without a metronome, a metronome, a metronome, and I can ride my bike without handlebars, without handlebars, without handlebars... or something like that.

I can design an engine sixty four miles to a gallon of gasoline...

A wave is a wave is a wave... is a wave. I tend to wave on lonely roads or if I see another motorcyclist in less than perfect weather. I'm usually dodging traffic and can't focus on other motorcyclists who are out joyriding. I'm not really sure if there's a right or wrong or cool or whatever. Sometimes for funsies, I just point in a very accusatory way (the evil closet monkey from Family Guy as a reference). There's always the sideways metronome...

Two fingers out, held down toward the road.... "keep the rubber side down" (2 wheels... 2 fingers)

No handlebars
No handlebars

I can keep rhythm with no metronome
No metronome
No metronome

I'm sorry I asked. I withdraw the question.

No worries man! It's one of those questions that shows up on every forum eventually. What I'd like to know is how this became so "universal". Part of me wonders if it's just others' ways of outing themselves as internet addicts:confused:.

I'm not an addict, I can log off whenever I want too, and I will too, just after one more post.

Really? Questions about motorcycle waves show up on cooking forums?

Ya got me there. I was implying motorcycling forums. However, your theory would better explain it's widespread use... :p

The wave is a source of a lot of social anxiety for me. What if I wave and they don't? They wave and I don't? What if it's a whole group, do I wave at each one? Do I have to change the wave as they stream by? Will one of them think I'm waving at their passenger and try to knife me in a bar later? If he waves in a corner and I don't, if he a better rider than I?

If it were up to me, I'd replace the wave with the 1000 yard stare.

waaay too much thought into this.

I have a "special wave" for all the drivers that cut me off/turn left across my lane/etc.

This is friggan hilarious. I wave to everyone, not the two finger down salute, well I do that sometimes. Most of the time I do a lefty salute by bringing my two fingers up to my helment and bringing them down, old west style. I'm bringing it back.

I don't like to wave on the NCX, my stupid hand always manages to catch the spine on my barkbusters. Can't do just a little wave either, then they can't see it because of said barkbusters.

I only wave if I get waved at,
talking about wave's I used to have wavy hair and the buggers waved me good bye down the plug hole.
bastids they got away with it but never mind I'll get my revenge in the after life!!LOL
