YSS Shock

I was wondering if forum members could share their knowledge/experience with YSS shock longevity.

From my reading it is a pretty basic emulsion shock. Since I am used to the stock shock I figured anything else would be an upgrade. I know that I can invest more in a shock but I am not sure that I would feel a difference for street commuting justifying the price increase. Since I have a 700S there are fewer options than the X.
 
OK. I have some reasonable experience of YSS products. I am having a bit of an episode with YSS as a corporation currently, but that is nothing to do with the longevity or performance of their products and will be related on a separate thread.

I have used their emulsion shock on my former CRF250L. From memory I had it for about 20,000kms on that bike and it performed as well as I would have wished, and never gave me any issues whatsoever. It didn't get an easy time on that little bike because I spent much of my time hammering around local rough backroads, some of which would compare well with some motocross tracks in profile etc. The rest of the time was spent offroad. The only adjustments I required were initial sag setup followed by a click of damping adjustments as required with colder or warmer weather. A click back in cold and forward in warm. The new owner of that CRF still has it and I am told it is still issue free and performing well.

My new CRF300L now also has a YSS but it is one of the more expensive items with the remote gas canister. I went for that model thinking of more damping adjustment for comfort purposes rather than performance. The jury is out as to whether I needed it or not. There are now 9300kms on that item and again good performance with no issues.

Now, a word of warning. You need to ascertain the eye to eye measurement of your OEM shock and ensure that YSS have the same eye to eye measurement on their replacement. I discovered this to my detriment when I ordered a third YSS for my X-Adv. They supplied me with an Asian version which was 10mm shorter than OEM for European models, but I didn't discover this until the shock was on the bike. It would appear that some of the distributors also were unaware of this. The follow up of this issue is proving a bit of an episode and more of that later.

So in summary imho YSS manufacture quality reliable products that should serve You well.
 
Thank you for your detailed post Griff. It appears for my model there is a standard and one that is 10mm shorter. I got 80k km out of the stock. If I got that out of the YSS I figured I could have it rebuilt. Adding that many more km's seems far in the distance. The further away the suppliers are from me the more nervous I get about running into a problem. Pricing is better further away but if there is a service issue is it worth saving a few dollars.

I thought of the remote adjuster as well but have made the decision that I don't use it now so I would probably not use much on a new one based on my riding.

I'm sorry to hear of your difficulty and hopefully they sort it out for you.
 
YSS make a lot of shocks for the NC bikes. They have multiple variants, some with adjustable length, some with remote preload adjusters, I think even some with adjustable compression damping. They all have adjustable preload and rebound damping. I bought a NCX shock for my NCS but it had adjustable length so it wasn't an issue.

It was this one
MZ456-305TRL-34-X
150 N/mm spring
305 mm long +/- 5mm
The TRL means
Threaded preload adjuster
Rebound damping (no separate compression)
Adjustable for Length

So just be informed when you are ordering as they make tons of shocks.
 
From my research it looks like my 2013 NC700S uses a MZ456-300TRL-33. There is another one but I assume that is for the lowered version. It can't hurt hurt to double check the measurement. Cold is coming so doing the last 3 day home repair of the season.
 
Put one on mine a few months back, play in the bottom bush out of the box, poor threads on the pre load and sloppy damping adjuster and general crappy ride, certainly not the usual high quality that YSS had 10 years ago. This is the second time now YSS have left me disappointed, that's it now, I'll be spending more next time and going for a higher quality item.

Sorry to hear that and I must admit it is at variance with my own experiences with regard to performance and reliability. Personally if I had found such a significant number of faults out of the box I would have returned it to the manufacturer without delay. I had to return one item to them due to a length issue and their response was positive and it got sorted out to my satisfaction.
 
I bought a F/R set for my R1200RT two years ago and I have been very happy with the initial quality and the performance over the last 22,000 miles. I did not buy direct from YSS or off eBay but rather through a suspension shop that specializes in BMW so the shocks were built to order and delivered to me through the shop. I installed them and did the damping and rebound adjustments. I happily recommend YSS based on this experience.

I want to toss something out there. YSS shocks are often counterfeited. You would think it would more likely be the case with Ohlins or Penske. I ordered a pair of YSS for my Xmax and they just did not look right. I began searching the web and found the alert from YSS on the topic and the way to identify a counterfeit. I then sent pics to YSS and it was confirmed that they were counterfeit. It was kind of a mess getting my money back, but I did. I bought them off eBay and found out through an Xmax forum that the same seller was still selling counterfeit YSS products as recently as a couple of months ago.

Got this shock and the two previous from the UK importer i believe. The twin shocks for my Kwak scooter just galled up and stripped the thread when I tried to adjust them, and that was with the grub screw right out, yet the shock I got for my ST1100 7 years ago was absolutely A1 in every way. Obviously something is up, maybe they are outsourcing.
 
I understand that sentiment completely. But I've had very good luck, generally, as a purchaser and a seller.
I agree. There are dishonest sellers on eBay, but lately issues and disputes are settled quickly, and largely in favor of the buyer. I use eBay with confidence. I have worse luck dealing with general online stores and directly with companies.
