Winter Time Blues

Not to pick on anyone -
Black ice is formed when the temps are in the negative numbers and lots of cars with their exhaust are on the road !
The exhaust and the weight of the tires cause a very very thin layer of ice to form.
And you cant see it.
Yea we get that here.
But is doesn't happen all over - remember negative number temps!
Not true But the ice makes funny noises that is a natural warning to go slow.

Per USDA and NOAA,

Understand that black ice is like regular ice.

It is a glaze that forms on surfaces (especially roads, sidewalks, and driveways) because of a light freezing rain or because of melting and re-freezing of snow, water, or ice on surfaces.

It doesn't even have to re-freeze, it's just thin "glare ice" that is translucent so you see the black pavement through it. When it is on lighter surfaces like concrete it is even harder to detect. Ice and motorcycles don't mix. The digital readout on my RS900 Kawi even flashed "ice" in low temperatures. I rarely ride when it is below 50* anyway.
