When should a tire be replaced?

tirepenny.jpg

Most manufactures recommend changing a tire with it is worn to 1/32 of an inch of tread remaining. If you insert a penny into a groove in the center of your tire, 1/32 of an inch is right at the top of Lincoln's head.

What about Michelin Pilot Road 3's? I don't know what site you got the prices from so what I listed may be different. The PR 4s should be out in January.

Front tire - 120/70 ZR17 Retail $212.95
Rear Tire - 160/60 ZR17 Retail $257.95

I have added the Shinko 705 rear tire. Called the wholesaler Western Power Sports and the tire is in stock. So, any dealer that deals with Western can get this tire for you.

You are correct. I completely forgot about the Motard tires category, that is what happens when you get old.. After looking at the tires, I believe that these tires would be great on a NC700.

Thank you for the Pirelli's. Those tires are a give away that you really like to get into the turns. Have fun.

Send some size information and what you had to fabricate to get the tires to work with the front fender. We will put these tires at the bottom of the list in a category called "others". Also, if you can get the manufactures factory vendor number for the tire, and retail price. If it rolls it will be added.
I believe Western Power Sports is the wholesale vendor for Shinko, who sells the dealers these tires. I saw the picture on the tread and those wide front tires look great.
Living on the water front, I ride in a lot of sand. So, I have to have a skinny front tire. We all do different things with our bikes. So, we all have needs for many different types of tires.

Shinko offers several different tires that show exact fit for the NC700X per their website:

All | Shinko Tire USA

The Advance and the Raven look interesting, but not a lot of reviews posted.
I ran a 009 Raven on my Bandit 1250, and obsessively chronicled it's life here - Shinko 009 Raven Sport Touring Tire - TWT Forums

Got about 9k miles out of it, which is pretty darn good on the Bandit, most ST tires only survived about 7k miles on that tire killer. But, I was getting 12-14k out of PR2 tires, and when I did the math, the PR2 was cheaper/mile.

Because I'm a nerd, here are the numbers, value per mile. Prices are from DISCOUNT MOTORCYCLE TIRES BY METZELER, MICHELIN SOUTHWEST MOTO TIRES Tucson, AZ Call or Text as of today.

Shinko 009 - $103.95 - 9,000mi - $0.01155/mi

Michelin Pilot Road 2 - $149.95 - 14,000mi - $0.01071/mi

So, for the money, really, you're better off spending the extra $50 up front. You factor in that you save $30 in tire mounting/balancing fees because you're not changing the tires as often, and that cost per mile goes down even more.

As good as the Shinko is, it doesn't stack up against the Road2. I'm a big PR2 homer, that's no secret, but this thread is why. They're cheap to run (in the long run), they have phenomenal feel and grip -- wet, dry, cold, hot, whatever -- they're just much better than the Shinko in every way. I have a pair of Road 2's on my garage floor as we speak that I'll mount up sometime this week.
Think the 009 was the last non-Michelin Pilot Road 2/3 tire I've used.
