There are usually a good selection of hearing protection in the hunting department of stores. The amount of decibel reduction is listed for each product. LIke with sun screen the more the better. The ear canal is sensitive so most plugs take getting used to.

I got a pair of custom earplugs made and they have been great. They were expensive, $120, but I'm happy I got them. I was using foam plugs and these just fit better (consistently each time) and are very easy to get in and out and do a great job on the widn noise etc. You could choose the colors so I chose something that I should be easy able to find if I dropped it. They are a bit weird looking but that probably says more about the shape of my ears that anything else. Took about 2 weeks from initial mold to receiving them and having them fitted.

Would you believe foam earplugs samplers up to 35 different? One will likely work for even those who don't like the foam ones they've tried so far, then you can buy those in bulk.
