As we all know, adding farkles is a never ending process that can get costly. I thought I'd share how I've been funding my own addiction and even how I paid for my NC.
I started using two apps on my phone, Digit and Acorns last year. Digit is a savings app and Acorns is an investing app. Both get tied to your bank account and pull small amounts out, but they do it a little differently. Both allow you to pull money out at any time, although it can take a few days.
Digit pulls out a few bucks here and there. You can tell it how conservative or aggressive to be and set lower limits on you account balance so it won't pull anything when your balance is below a threshold. I like it because I can shove an extra few bucks in there manually too and keep it out of my checking, and out of mind so I don't spend it.
Acorns uses a different technique where it rounds every transaction from your checking account up to the nearest dollar. The more you use you checking account the more it saves. It pulls a few bucks out every week or so.
Between the two of these over a few months I saved up enough to pay for half of my used 2013 NC700XD. (The rest came from an employee stock purchase program.) But I was able to pay for the whole thing in cash without having to pull money from savings or checking, making my wife happy. She's smart enough to know it wasn't free money, but it just made it less painful because it was saved in little amounts over time.
So now I use these apps to fund my farkling. I have a target amount, and when I get there I pull the money out and make the purchase. I just bought new Michelin Pilot 4 tires and crash bars are next. This also keeps me under control (a little) so I'm not buying boxes of expensive add-ons all at once.
Anyway, I thought I'd share how I minimize the grief I get from my better half when a new box arrives via UPS!
Happy farkling!
(I have no affiliation with either Acorns or Digit.)
