Frunk lid latch malfunction

So the other day I was halfway thru a ride and pulled over to put something in the frunk. Dropped it in and tried to close the lid, and it wouldnt latch. Tried to close it 1/2 dozen times and gave up, and rode the rest of the way home with it unlatched.

Once home I examined it, got a flat blade screw driver and fiddled with it, gave it a shot of WD40 and then it latched, and unlatched, and latched 1/2 dozen times.

It was 28 degrees on the ride, so maybe the cold affected it, but it seems to be fine now.

Any thoughts? Or have any others had this issue? Does it need to be lubricated ocassionally?

Haven’t lubed my frunk latch in the 9.5 years I’ve owned the bike, nor has the frunk latch given me any trouble. However, I am seriously considering doing the hidden cable mod to be able to unlatch the frunk in case of failure of the primary mechanism. When I went to Newfoundland I worried what would happen if I couldn’t get the frunk open. I had a lot of important stuff in there.

My fear is not being able to open the back seat to get more fuel. That would be a real problem!

The Aussie "Honda NC750X Stuff" has a YouTube video on how to rig up a way to open the rear seat / fuel door should the OEM mechanism not work. The fix needs to be installed proactively before the mechanism fails.

I ride with my frunk unlatched all the time, just easier to access without having to turn off the bike to use the key to open it. Only lock it when I park somewhere other than home.

I fangled a knob with the lid from a Worcestershire sauce bottle, a spare key I had cut and some epoxy - easy access to the frunk when riding, but still kept closed when out and about

I like the idea, but really don't have a taste for Worcestershire sauce...ha. Not a condiment guy at all really, will have to think on an alternative cap....

I used a 2001-2017 Goldwing radio knob for the dedicated frunk key. Looks good on the NC.

Yea, made mine out of the lid off an aerosol spray can from the garage

someone (dduelin maybe?) used a headlight adjuster knob that looked really good.

My frunk latch worked fine today.

I’ve used aerosol spray can knobs, Radio Shack knobs, and a Goldwing radio knob.

I used to be able to do that with earlier NCs but the previous owner of my bike drilled a series of small holes in the battery compartment panel and now at 50-55 mph the unlocked frunk lid flies open.

Latch seems to be working fine now. Wonder what went wrong the other day that it wouldn't latch?

The emergency release is the way to go. I had a cable freeze on me
(different bikes) and another that almost froze. The unlock function
was in the ignition location and you might break the key trying to
unlatch it.
