Fork Oil.

Fork oil vs ATF: Fluid designed for the task at hand vs fluid that ‘will work, or at least appear to work, adequately.’

Gear oil is superb chain lube. It just flings everywhere, stinks like sulphur, and is a dirt magnet.

Yes.......Honda used ATF for over 40 years as fork oil. With internals that look remarkably like the modern NC forks.

Finished fork oil change today. Less than 8000 miles but six years old. Plus I didn't like the hit from sharp little bumps. Used Dextran ATF for fluid. So far it seems to have eased the initial jolt I was feeling.

Yes......Every car manufacturer used non-detergent motor oil and then barely-detergent motor oil in their engines for many decades, with internals that look remarkably like modern engines. You _can_ use an SA or even SE engine oil in a current engine, and depending it’ll run quite a while and most users are unlikely to ‘notice’ the difference. ...just like ATF vs fork oil...
