!! Cancelled. !!

Old timers on the forum would know that the group has historically held a motorcycle gathering in the Smoky Mountains area of western Tennessee/eastern North Carolina (USA) in mid to late may. The group that shows up ranges from around 10 to 20 people, some on NCs and some on other machines that vary from year to year. The origins of the gathering go back to an old Honda Nighthawk group, then a member on the forum here invited the NC group, and now it’s a mixture of old friends and newcomers on all kinds of street bikes.

The gathering was always centered around Kickstand Lodge, Stecoah, NC ( www.kickstandlodge.com ). However the COVID pandemic caused us to miss 2020, then in 2021 Kickstand opened later than usual. We had a gathering last year that was fun, but people were overnighting in several different locations so it was difficult to meet up with others in the group.

The timing has always been the weekend prior to the weekend that involves Memorial Day. So for 2022, that would be about May 19-22. The problem right now is we don’t know if Kickstand will open at all this year, or when they might open. The web site has not been updated for 2022. I emailed the owner in the past and I emailed them again today, awaiting response.

With all that said, I’m posting today to gauge interest in the outing, and get ideas for alternative dates or locations in case Kickstand Lodge is not available.

My personal thoughts:
1) Going the weekend after the Memorial Day weekend is fine with me if that allows us to be at Kickstand.
2) As for other venues, I will not stay at the nearby Iron Horse Lodge ( https://ironhorsenc.com/ ) as they changed ownership and in my opinion they are overpriced and offer poor service. We can operate the gathering from there if people wish, but in that case I would probably camp at Fontana Dam.
Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground over by the Blue Ridge Parkway got washed away in a flood last year and is not open yet. https://www.facebook.com/Blue-Ridge-Motorcycle-Campground-253493794663049/
Then over on the western edge of the foothills, at Tellico Plains, TN, there is a motorcycle campground that shows promise, but I have not stayed there https://smittyslodge.com/.
Over in the east, we could look at the touristy town of Maggie Valley. It offers plenty of hotels, but really no tent camping or a hang-out place. There are a number of RV resorts in that area.

I would be interested in a day ride on the weekend. I live about 30 minutes away on the TN side just over 411 so no lodging needed for me.

The weekend after Memorial Day will be fine for me....this year I am scheduled to work the weekend before Memorial Day and may not be able to find a replacement. If the kickstand is not available, camping at Fontana Dam would be acceptable. Kickstand Lodge hasnt posted anything on their Facebook page either since Oct 10, 2021....

Thanks for everyone’s replies. I still have no word from Kickstand Lodge. If anyone else wants to try to contact them about their 2022 season plans, be my guest. We’ll give it a few days, then decide a date, so people can make firm plans before It’s too late.

There's also the Two Wheel Inn and the Quality Inn in Robbinsville, central to 129/Dragon, Fontana, and the Skyway if you weren't already aware.

I am interested in this, not sure I can commit to anything, but if I am free, I may be able to make it up that way. I usually stay at the Mainstay Suites in Alcoa when I go up that way. Leave my house, ride up and through the mountains all day, then exit the Dragon toward Maryville, possibly hit Foothills Parkway, then over to Alcoa to the Mainstay. It is right beside 3 or 4 good restaurants, one being a Texas Roadhouse, of which I always walk to after checking in the hotel for steak and beers. Or sometimes I ride up to the casino in Murphy, NC and stay there, then ride all through the mountains and back home the next day. Murphy is another place that has a lot of hotels. You can get to Deal's Gap Resort in about dead on 1 hour from Murphy. Probably farther away than you all would be looking to stay though.

But anyways, I'll be watching this thread and hopefully I can at least meet up with everyone if there is a gathering/ride at a certain time or place.

Two Wheels of Suches is a good idea. I know where it is and what it looks like, but I have not stayed there. Can it accommodate campers, and also those who want lodging, all in one place? That would be ideal. If someone here has extensive experience with Two Wheels and could recommend or not recommend it, please share your thoughts.

The Quality Inn at Robbinsville might be nice, but people wanting to camp would need to stay elsewhere, and that was sort of the awkward type arrangement we had last year. Maybe I’m the only one, but I have zero desire to stay in a hotel and to be dependent on restaurants for all my meals.

Thanks for posting your ideas.

I just went to 2 wheels website.....

Tent Camping Rates

$20/night per tent, double occupancy. $8.00 for each additional person in the same tent, per night.

Toy Hauler or RV Camping Rates

$30/night per vehicle, with no limit on occupancy. RV Camping is only available in the vehicle parking area (please refer to the map). No hookups are available (water, electricity, and sewer are not provided).

Rates

The cabin rental rate is $70.00 per night.

Rates

The lodge has a base rate of $80.00 per night, per room. Please note, 7% GA State sales tax and 5% Union County lodging tax (Total of 12%) are added to the booking total at checkout. We require payment for 1-night when making a booking, additional nights will be paid at check-in

Looks like they only have 8 cabins (similiar to the cabins at Kickstand) and only 3 rooms at the lodge (which is the restaurant).
The cabins have a 2 night minimum on the weekends.

670cc, what about the campground in Tellico Plains you occasionally use? Does it have tent camping and/or cabins?
When I camp near Tellico Plains, it is at a National Forest campground along the Cherohala Skyway. There is no lodge or cabins there, just campsites that accomodate RVs or tents. I’m very happy staying there, but it won’t work for people who don’t want to camp.

I stay at TWO Suches quite often as it is only 425 miles from my house and from there I can ride within a triangle from there to Ocoee/Tellico Plains to Spruce Pine. There is a lot of room for tent camping but the lodge and cabins are reserved far in advance. It's only an hour north of Atlanta suburbs and every nice weekend it fills up.

FYI, I won't be able to attend and I have no experience with this place but I ride by it often and there are always people staying there. Another Tellico Plains option.

Nice. Will consider it. Thanks for sharing.

I was referring to Two Wheel Inn in Robbinsville, NC, maybe 20ish minutes below Deal's Gap Resort. Note, I haven't stayed there, and their website doesn't lead me to believe they offer camping. https://twowheelinn.com/

Two Wheels of Suches is a good bit farther away in Suches, GA. I've been there, but only for a Ducati Days event. I haven't stayed there. Nice place though.

Ah, yes, you did write Two Wheel Inn. My reading comprehension was poor.

I’ve stayed at TWO of Suches many times. It’s only 425 miles from my house and from there I can ride roads in the triangle taking in Ocoee/Tellico Plains and Spruce Pine. TWO offers quite a bit of tent camping space and cabins but the problem as I see it is it’s only an hour north of Atlanta’s suburbs and it fills to crowded every nice weekend. I usually have to reserve a spot far in advance.

I go by here often and it looks like a very nice place though I’ve never stopped. It looks like it could easily accommodate many groups at the same time. 39/Mecca Pike/TN315 is one of my favorite roads going either north or south. Hard packed gravel Kimsey Mountain Hwy connects 315 just north of Reliance to 68 and is an interesting way to cross the mountains there.

I was looking on their website earlier, rates seem reasonable. not far for Tellico Plains. They have cabins, RV spots (but with only 30amp service), and of course tent camping available. Website states they offer for sale Breakfast and Dinner on Sat/Sun...and the cabins contain 2 twin beds.
