Aftermarket Rear shock options

A service would not dramatically change what you want the shock to do. I talked to some suspension specialists here in the US. I can't get a spring for my weight, would have to have a custom spring made. They felt the shock would be under dampened creating another set of issues.

I think where you are at is as good as it gets. Doesn't seem to work well with heavier riders. I wouldn't pour more money into it if you have reached the limits of it. I may be dead wrong on this and it's working well for the lighter riders. Many of the original pioneers did this year's ago. Would like to hear from them.
 
By the way anyone trying to do this on the relative cheap. You can find the bike that ohlins fits your desired spring in as oem by searching their catalogue at https://www.ohlins.com/products/database/ then if you can find someone selling their old stock shock for cheap you can just remove the spring from their shock. I bought a Ducati 1100 evo shock for $150(nzd) cheaper than a ohlins spring ($250). Removed the spring and it’s mine!
I have a Ducati Scrambler 1100 that I have fitted with full Ohlins. So now I’m thinking of fitting the Ducati shock to my NC750X as it’s only done 900mls.
 
Its doable, proper length, need to figure out spring weights. Stock NC shock has around a 700ft ft pound spring. I have a 1100 EVO Monster, stock shock is sorry. Let me know how the Ohlins feel.

I did fit a 2018 RSV4 shock with an Ohlins 1093-49-130 (748ftlb) spring on my 2014 NC 700 for my 209lb butt. Works fantastic on and off road.

I have now fitted the Scrambler shock to the rear of my NC. Had to fit upside down as it had a fork on one end not the round ball type joint. Not yet ridden to test but it was already adjusted for me on the Scrambler.
At the same time I fitted Lust Racing dog bones. The bike fought me all the way, one of the bolts stripped a thread and all the nuts could do with changing. I’ve ordered the parts from Honda cost £32 inc. shipping

The moment or length of swing arm to force applied from shock is much longer than the Monster setup, so you might have to crank the preload down to get proper sag adjustments.

Moment numbers get worse with rider or loads. Since the load is further away.

The dog bones are to lower the bike 40mm. I am working on the basis that the shock was set up for me by my suspension guru on my Scrambler it’s an 1100 by the way not the 800 which is plentiful and they’re plentiful because they are crap. The 1100 has a Kayaba shock well the NC has now.
 
I don't know what a Scrambler shock is but some shock designs won't work correctly mounted upside down.
Why not? It only moves up and down like forks that can be one way or the other. And they say upside down forks work better. ;)
 
Forks can't reversed willy-nilly either.... they are designed to be upright or upside down.

Location of oil reservoirs and oil passages, location thereof under or over the cartridge or valving, or if they have a diaphragm that separates charged gas from the oil are several reasons.
 
I think, and it’s only a guess, that twin tube shocks would be the ones you can’t fit upside down because of the reservoir. But the single tube like mine should be ok.
 
You are asking a simple question but it has a complicated answer. Unfortunately most of the riders here are on the X model which has a taller shock. There were no 750S models available in the US and I think they stopped coming to Canada in 2014 ish.

I have a 2013 NC700S and did some research on shocks that will fit my model. Not sure if the 18 is the same as the 13. I have no experience with any of these but was interested in having ideas if mine ever failed.

Nitron: They make a few models that according to their site fit 2011 to 2018. They seemed pretty pricey to me. More features...worth it?

YSS: Only seemed to have one model. Lower price point. Claims to fit 2012 to 2014 models. If the Nitron fits 11-18 maybe this would work. I would be leaning in the direction personally as I am use to the stock shock so I would appreciate an upgrade due to a failure. I'm not sure I would be willing to pry my tight little wallet open far enough to the get the Nitron.

I know about the rear suspension being a bit soft for the OEM spring so I am thinking of using my old shock I used on my GSXR750 that I bought obscenely expensive but underutilises, so I removed it when I scrapped the bike.
I was thinking of using that shock on my CB400X but got conned by the shop into getting another OEM instead.

So the question is.... is the NC750X (2018-2020 model) shock mounting similar for the previous models? I know the CB500X changed their shock mounting for 2019 model onwards.
The brilliant thing about the shock I have (its a foxshox that's been discontinued) is its mounting can be changed if someone to fabricate it. And its overall length can be altered (within reasonable length) to suit the bike.

Any comments about using such a shock? Of course I'll be getting the shock reconditioned before I use it.

As far as I know, the frame and rear suspension are basically the same for 2012 through 2020 NCX models. For 2021 and later, the height was lowered and the suspension travel was reduced.
 
Yes, the shock mounting is identical on the latest NC to all the others. The shock eye to eye lengths change between models but not by much. Bear in mind the spring stiffness on the NC is large, 140-150 N/mm. AFAIK GSXR shocks use much lower stiffness springs so it might not be a suitable substitute as is.
