Hi all,

I have a 2015 nc700x that I am preparing for a long trip this summer. I will need to use the back seat to store some bags and was wondering if it's OK to remove the seat and leave without it. I wanna avoid the pain of removing all the bags to put gas every few hundreds miles. Or maybe if someone have a better solution like a replacement seat with a hole for gas cap... I am open to any ideas.

Good idea removing the seat - my only concern would be water ingress for components that are designed to sit under a cover instead of exposed. Probably a non-issue though.

I know a company makes a metal plate with a hole for the gas cap, but it's stratospheric pricing - around 300 bucks for some steel plate...? In a touring context, I'll spend an extra few minutes each gas stop and put that cash towards more hotel/beer/gas/tyres/chains on the way.

I pack my bike in such a way that I just unhook the straps holding the bag on the back seat which allows me to lift the seat. Once finished filling up I just lower the seat and hook up again. Takes a few seconds to do.

I have no wood working skills but my DIY approach was to make a flat wood "seat" that was more or less the same outline shape as the passenger seat and incorporated the U cut-out for access to the gas cap without lifting it. It bolted to the existing seat hinge and could lift up. I wanted a flat surface to bolt down an auxiliary gas tank that could quickly be removed. I only used the extra gas tank for testing it and riding 1000 and 1500 mile Iron Butt rides where I needed range for 250 miles between gas stops at 80 mph. I also made a few camping trips with the tank removed leaving the flat surface. Others did it before me and their efforts looked a little better. I used a piece of thin exterior plywood and painted it black.

I did eventually buy a Dale's Rack with the Gas Hole like the one on Brad's bike in post #7 but the wooden one worked for occasional use at an investment of about $10 and a hour's work.

I seem to recall someone made a similar rack out of a piece of plastic "cutting board"

Honestly the Dale's Rack is a genius idea, but if it is no longer available it should be fairly easy to make a reasonable facsimile of a copy out of some sort of pieces of board, be it a plastic cutting board or a piece of wood and some U bolts or other bits and pieces from the local hardware store. It may not look as nice, or be quite so well engineered, but I probably would have made a "Bob's Rack" for my bike had I not been able to get a genuine "Dale's Rack"

Old Can Ride had the idea of cutting a hole at the forward edge of the rear seat to gain access to the fuel cap, I think he used a large hole saw to do it. IIRC he covered the hole with a flap of fabric to hide the unlocked cap.
