Ok I want to take a vote on this. What is the number 1 accessory for cold riding? Some say heated gloves, some say heated grips, some say heated jackets etc........ I want to know from the members on this forum what is the one thing that you must absolutely have for cold weather?

Heated Gloves definitely Number 1 in conjunction with muffs or substantial handguards. . Have heated grips and all they do is roast the palms of my hands.

You can‘t approach cold weather riding with 1 accessory, so it’s difficult to answer the poll question. It takes an emseble of cold weather gear components, and the set of gear and accessories varies depending on the temperature and the duration of the ride. I think a good jacket to block the wind and insulate the body core is the foundation for cold weather gear.

For me its a good base layer, i think it all starts there. Without it you simply get cold no matter what other gear you have.
I live in Iowa. I don't ride when it is 45 degrees or colder 30 minute ride one way to work. I have to agree base layers are key for me. I don't spend money on the "official" motorcycle gear. So I have an riding jacket (only actual riding gear I own other than a helmet) removable insulation, jeans, sweatpants, insulated work gloves and always no matter the temperature a good full face helmet.
Fyi Iowa is not a helmet law state.

I swear by a pair of XXXXL Iditerod mittens, $20 from Cabellas 20 years ago that I have w/a pair of Asian cotton knit gloves.
I could put the left mitten in my crotch, easily pull out my gloved hand that are quite dexterous. A poor mans' heated grips......which are also really nice.

I would also say a good base layer, along with additional layers to include a good jacket and windproof overpants. I don't have any heated gear. So, if the above does not work, then it's the heated seat and heated steering wheel of my Ram. :)

I have heated glove liners-due to I use different gloves for the outside temp/riding conditions and I can slip my gloves over the heated glove liners..For the base layer, I use my hunting base layer which is good for the bike, or wear a snow mobile suit I have...

A polar fleece neck scarf...

This! All the heated gear in the world isn't gonna keep that neck warm! I can't ride in cold weather without a fleece neck covering. I don't ride in cold enough weather to need heated gear. I can stay comfortable layering up and wearing leather jacket and thinsulate gloves down in the 40's, and even tough it out in the upper 30's if needed. Any colder than that, I just take the car or truck....I don't have anything to prove with cold weather endurance and we have mild days in north AL throughout the winter too.

My helmet? (-:

As was said, a single-item approach won’t cut it. It takes multiple things simultaneously, and what they are depends upon the weather where you are, and how long you plan to ride in it. I might well argue that the motorcycle is a major factor. A GW is massively different than an NCX in terms of what you have to do to keep warm.

I had a feeling people would over think this..... One thing that is most important to YOU. Not a blog about all the riding gear that you combine. Just what one thing you feel had the biggest effect for you personally.

For me, a electric vest.

I’d have to say my Aerostich suit. Being Gore-Tex, it’s really wind proof, to eliminate the wind taking heat from your core, it has a great neck protection collar, and it goes on and comes off quickly. Add to that, it’s great in a get off.

DAMHIK.

If only one thing then heated grips. I can layer up my torso and put foot warmers inside boots but can’t get truly warm gloves and still comfortably work controls.

They will get used more than you think. Caught in rain turn on grips. Wearing light gloves on cool fall day turn on grips. Always there at push of a button.

I suppose we can take it for granted that we dont all go out in teeshirts and shorts in cold weather, so a good winter suit is a given. As such I think the OP was thinking in terms of items used in addition to that. The clue was in "heated".
