Hello all, I am now a proud owner of a good second hand Honda Nc700x. My specific question is in regards to the clutch, for some reason unbeknownst to me I was at a stop street but forgot to shift down to 1st. I attempted to pull off in what must of been 4th gear and the clutch disengaged with a grinding noise. Would this be a safety feature due to too much strain on the clutch? This previously owned a VFR 600, CBR600f2 but I believe the NC700 had a dual clutch which is new to me

The dual clutch is only used on the automatic transmission model of NC700X, which apparently you don’t have because you spoke of shifting down yourself. Your manual transmission clutch is a typical motorcycle multiplate wet clutch, nothing fancy. If you attempted to engage the clutch in too tall of a gear from a start, the engine and might buck and shake but no harm is done. Forget about it and enjoy the bike.

I've mistakenly done third gear starts a couple of times, do-able but bucks/shakes regardless of clutch lever acumen ; }

Sure it isn't just that?

Thank you the feedback that was really helpful. Good to know the type of clutch I have. I only experienced this one other time when I had to pull off from half way up a really steep driveway (a dog ran in front of me)which resulted in me free wheeling back down and pulling off on a less steep point. I was just curious because besides the two incidents the bike is a breeze throughout the gear range with no sign of clutch ware, I have a steep driveway and its breezes up in 1st/2nd when I pull up with momentum or pull off from the flat gradient at the bottom

The grinding noise could be clutch ‘chatter’.

We had this problem at work with a hydraulic clutch load cell. When the clutch engaged it would chatter and grind. We replaced the fluid and the problem went away. It wasn’t a clutch problem, it was a lubrication issue.

You said you just got the motorcycle. Perhaps changing the oil is a good idea so you get a known good oil in there.

Thank you for the advise, I haven't put many miles on it as I've been wanting to do an oil change first. Unfortunately here in South Africa we still on lock down. So I'm pretty going to park the bike off until shops open again

Oil changes are quite easy on the NC. Only one plastic cover, and you're right at the oil filter. Drain plug is on the bottom. Crush washers are a handful of cents. Or I guess rands?

I use a Mobil 1 car filter. Check out https://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html#5 for other recommended options

I don’t even remove the lower plastic cover to change the oil and filter.

Brilliant! I guess I made it harder for myself :D
I use a filter wrench with a ratchet and extension. Plenty of room to get the filter out.

Be sure to let the exhaust cool down before you reach in to grab the filter.. Ask me how I know!!
