I can only hope someone else has had a similar condition and can help solve this puzzle. I had gotten my bike back from fixing the shift motor failure and went for another ride. Came home after 140 miles and parked the bike. 6 days later I prepared to go for another ride. Rolled the bike off the center stand and forward to a stop in the garage. Heard a clicking sound I did not recognize from the back of the bike. Went to the station to fill up. Removed the fill cap and saw metal (a curved shape of the tank) 1/4” below the metal ring/guard at the fill area. Normally I can insert the fill nozzle from the dispenser (gas pump) into my tank a few inches. Not this time. Entire area covered by a steel plate. I was only able to add another 0.8 gal after the 140 miles so something was wrong. Went for a 70 mile ride and absolutely no movement of the gas gauge.

Just to convince myself I wasn’t imaging things I went to a Dealer and had him open the tank on an NC750x. Looked just like I thought it should with no metal blocking the fill area.

Has anyone experienced this?? Any guess as to what has happened??

YES happened to me, a vacuum was created because vent hose for fuel tank was pinched ( my fault). 1200$ for new tank installed.

I think when the Dealer replaced the shift motor they pinched a hose upon reassembly. Both the fuel tank Drain Hose A and the fuel tank Breather Hose come down just behind the Shift Motor. See pages 1-41 and 7-8 in the Shop Manual. Do you know exactly which hose you pinched?

No, but I believe I pinched it when replacing cover of front sprocket when I was cleaning the chain.
I know where you mean and there are a lot of tubes and electrical wires stuffed into that cutout in the cover. I've been in there before and thanks for the warning to be careful to not pinch the hoses.

This is the first time this type problem has been brought up on this forum in it's approximately 9 year run. Thanks for mentioning it so we can all try to avoid this costly hose pinching situation.

Update: The Dealer acknowledged the hoses that were supposed to be behind the shift motor and outside the frame were instead behind/inside the frame and the center stand had pinched them closed causing the tank to collapse. They will replace the tank.

Good to hear this. Man, that would have sucked to have to fund that one on your own.
