I always factor in Mc Donalds into my long days of travel across Europe. The quality and price of their grub never varies and You know exactly what you will get on the daily long hauls. The biggest issue with restaurants on mainland Europe is time. One never gets out of one in less than an hour, but one is in and out of Mc's in 20 minutes and there is always a safe place to park without unloading the bike. I then revert to gourmet grub when staying in a particular area for a couple of days or more.

Your McDonalds are way better quality then ours!

Some folks don't like giving over their lives to a GPS device, but I don't mind. It's thrilling to follow the directions and not know where I'm going... as long as I don't go off a cliff I suppose!

I think GPS is one of the best inventions ever. We do all our planning on the PC and then dump into the Unit. As far as the Wife and I are concerned the GPS has taken much of the stressful aspects out of long distance travel. Nothing worse than getting lost in the middle of a huge city that one doesn't know. With an up to date GPS (mapping wise) that won't happen.

I cant stand our McDonalds anymore (from Indiana, Ky, or Tennessee). Wait times are horrific for 'fast' food, food tastes like cardboard (sorry, sometimes cardboard tastes better). With the amount of business they get, no time for any type of quality or quality control. Most fast food joints have went this route.

Strat, glad you made it home ok and wow; 120,000 miles on your NC. I thought I had a lot of miles on my Boulevard (close to 90,000 miles). Next year, do it in May and keep heading East and meet us in the Smokies :) Take US50 all the way to St. Louis and I-24 to Nashville than I-40 to Knoxville and catch US129 down thru the Dragon... (quicker route is I-70 to St. Louis).

sounds like "pulp fiction"...."hey, you know what they call a Quarter Pounder from McDonald's in Europe? A Royal...yeah...yeah...a Royal..."

Thats in France. Here in Ireland a Quarter Pounder is a quarter pounder.

That is incredible mileage on your NC Strat, i had no idea you were pushing that many Smiles! WOW. When you go that far on I80 you'll hit Wendover and you know what's over there right... Bonneville Man!! I am 700 miles north by Nort/west from there. Incredible area, flat as you can see for miles! With that schedule, that;ll be just before i leave for my Alaska trip so i don't know if i'll be able to ride down and meet up with you, would be great though. :{)

Everything's up in the air for next year. ☺ I'm looking forward to more nothernly roads.

I'm looking for cooler temps. Have to be more careful with what season I go out in.

Hey Strat, i know we spoke about it but did you ever complete a 50cc trip across the country? I was also curious what 50cc you rode that was able to go 65mph, none i've ever seen hahaha!!?? :{)

I've finished three IBA rides:
1) saddle sore (1000 miles in 24 hrs or less)
2) saddle sore in state (calif.)
3) bun burner (1500 miles in 36 hrs or less)

The 50 cc eludes me. I've made two attempts. one on the NC and one on the FJR.

The 50 cc is (more than other rides) an exercise in sleep deprivation.

If you take the shortest route (San Diego to Jacksonville), you have 6 hours down time at the half way point. (Amarillo, TX on the I-40, San Antonio, TX on I-10)
I planned to sleep there, but I was dangerously tired when I got half way. Never ride beyond your ability, and I was certainly doing that by the time I got there. I knew it, so I backed off. DNF.

I think about trying again, leaving at 4 or 5 AM would be better than later, like I did last time...
I'd like to try again, but I don't handle loss of sleep well.

300 miles, camp, 300 miles, then camp again is a pleasant existence... makes me enjoy riding the way IBA challenges... just can't.

50 cc is 50 hours coast to coast?

When I was younger rode my 84 wing from Chicago to San Francisco in 34 hours and LA to Chicago on my 91 wing in 32. Many a time with the wife along we would do 18 hour days from Chicago to San Antonio. All back in the 55 mph speed limit days. Always wanted to do the iron butt thing but never had the chance.

I like to cruise right around 75 mph. Your comment makes me think a group attack on the 50 CC (50 hours coast to coast) is something to think about. Not sure that would be better than going solo...

I'm up for the [Saddle Sore 1000] if anyone wants to try. (might take me a few days to get to where some of y'all are!)

Completing it gets you an official IBA #, a certificate, and the right to have the "IBA" license plate frame. ($40 for that if you send in photo copies of gas receipts when you finish)

Read about the 50cc rules [HERE]...

I was doing about 110 from West of Des Moines Iowa to just past Wendover Nevada. Got stopped as I slowed to 75 and got ticketed for 75. Crossed the rest of NV doing 60 (was agonizing) then sped up again in CA.
Don't do that much anymore! Plus 5 over is fast enough with a lot of states have gone to 80, 75 or 70. Doing 5 over these days you need to stay in the slow lane! At least in Illinois.

Smaller group.

That would be a kick. I've been trying to work up to that kind of a ride. I've had three 450-525 mile rides now, and need to make a few more adjustments. I'm now getting a lot of lower neck, middle of the shoulder muscle burning going on. My seated position always starts good, then i catch myself relaxing too much and slouching thus causing the lower neck/muscle burning. Stretching and correct posture corrects that, then after so many miles i get comfortable and it starts all over again. I enjoyed my 525 mile ride and felt pretty good afterwards, tired and more then ready to get off of the bike but still felt pretty good. I know myself and i def need more saddle time before i make an attempt later this year. Every saturday i try and head out for a long ride somewhere, and of course i find a neat little place for some PIE!! :{)

The 2 NC's I bought I gave to my daughters. I think They are a great machine. If you want to go longer distances then you have to spend some money on the seat. 1st you could try some bar risers/setbacks if right now you need to reach a little. EVERY bike I get now gets it's stock seat swapped out. I am on a ST1300 and know what seat I want but things have stopped me. I have an Airhawk seat pad and that has made it ok for distance but nothing like a custom seat. I have a Corbin seat on my CBR 1100XX and Heli Bars on it. I would rather go long distance on that than the ST. You are right... you need saddle time to work up to distance. That or youth!
I was going to be up in your neck of the woods until all the fires. Now just running my daughter and her NC out to Provo, UT for college then driving right back home. Next year!

Yah there is a little smoke in our area. No fires in our area, but lots of smoke from surrounding states that are burning up... :{)
