Ordered a shield and wasn’t sure if I should go with an 18” or 20” and this is the reply I got...

Hi David. Thank you for your order! Actually I'm going to send you a 20" windshield. With your shorter inseam, you fall into the 20" range on that bike. You are better off getting the 20" and keeping it in a low bracket position rather than raising an 18" to the top of its range. I'll also move the holes up 1" so the shield sits like a 19", just in case. You still have plenty of range to go up with our brackets. -

Mark

Thats A+++ customer service.

what does inseam have to do with how high your body is above the seat? Nothing. I have short legs and a tall torso. A windshield designed for me based on inseam would be too low.

I’m going to assume it has everything to do with manufacturing and selling to thousands of people and knowing what and what doesn’t fit and that being how he feeds his family.

I trust him.

Back to the original point - GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!

What you are not seeing is that they know his height as well. Your height and your inseam give them an indication of your torso height and therefore can recommend a size... so it is not really based off your inseam only.

It’s good that Madstad is raising the holes an inch. I drilled my holes myself and put them almost two inches higher than Madstad’s standard position. Higher holes puts the shield lower. And with that I still run my shield at the lowest point all the time. I’m 5’8” with 32” inseam and I think the shield is 20”, but it’s also an older, original style shield (which may different from present design). In my opinion, Madstad mounts the shields too high which allows air under them, striking the rider’s torso.

Yeah i have a 22" and wish it was taller. With it adjusted for the quietest cockpit the gap at the bottom is huge.

In retrospect, I regret cutting down the tallish shield on the Missus' Madstand (first-gen also) to suit her instead of drilling new holes. What was I thinking? Now the shield is limited to such-and-such a height, without the option of going higher if desired.
It was about 20" as I recall and I went to about 17 3/4".
Still, the rider's pocket has proven to be very satisfactory down to the 45 degree F (7 C) range, so all's well enough.
As for customer service, I have both voice and e-mail messages in to Madstad support and haven't heard back in several days. In December, that might be a little much. We shall see.

I have had a similar experience. They were friendly and helpful when I got them on the phone but I did have to put in more effort than I thought was professional. I was satisfied that I got a replacement for the shield I broke in the end. Happy with the product.
