Centerstand trick..

I just finished installing mine with the ratchet strap trick...easy 20 minutes job. This center stand is a must, it should not be an option and come installed from factory.

Yeah, if you're worried about that little bit of low-slung weight, you picked the wrong bike.

Anyway, after reading this thread, I was tempted to try my hand at installing my centerstand. I did goof and leave the bike in gear when I tried it, so I backed up to punt. The manual says that an alternative is to put the spring on and then slide the rod through. That's what I wound up doing. Here is the link to my 18 minute long installation video.

centerstand install trick

Using the same principle I would use a ratcheting tie down strap. Hook one end to the spring, the other to something fixed on the bike , like the rear wheel, then crank the ratchet until the spring meets its destiny.

and the one I am replying to. I may have read more but can't remember how many there were.

So.

It took me 50 minutes tools out to tools in. I tried the way the instructions say by hooking up the springs, starting the axle, lining it up and tapping it in. This all took a long time because I had trouble starting the spring pin. I dropped it multiple times, could not fit socket, had to re-apply Locktite etc. I also had to resort to the wife's help to tap the axle in as I did not have the strength to lie on my side, pull the thing into alignment (using X-ray vision) and tap the axle in. I thought about using the ratchet idea but it was so close I chose the wife.
You fellas with better skills made it seem pretty easy.
I had better skills when I was younger too.
Anyway it is on.

took about an hour total looking at youtube video and reading the installation PDF.
The technique you described worked especially well as I had the rear wheel off the ground on a swing arm stand.

I tied off the spring as described and used my left hand to rotate the rear wheel and guided the spring hooks into place with a screwdriver in my right.

Very easy!

Mine had only one spring attached from the dealer. Had to figure out how to do it, used the pry on the bolt method.

Thanks for the heads up. A center stand has been on my to-buy list for a while, but I have yet to pull the trigger. This looks like a way to get one at a really decent price.
 
StraTuner, and all thanks for the info. I called my "dealer" today and was told he couldn't get or order a center stand for me. Read the thread here and with shipping from Japan $110.40. I am probably way ahead that the dealer couldn't/wouldn't help. Sometimes it's no wonder dealerships fail so often.
 
Bike bandit is sending mine $128 delivered. This trick on install is brill! I have installed CS on a few bikes but this is the first I've ever seen the spring assist. Why didn't I think of this.
 
Installed mine yesterday evening, start to finish about 30 minutes thanks to the advice in this thread. Just a few minutes until the time for spring stretching, then hook up the rachet strap, 1 old shoelace, and done. Ordered from WeBike good service and good pricing. Thanks to all here for the time you took to post these helpful hints and instructions.
 
I tried various methods here. I attached the springs then hammered the bar in from the other side. When it got to the point where it needed to line up with the frame hole on the spring side, I attached a strap to the rear tire and the stand and rolled the bike forward until things lined up, applied the parking brake and hammered the rod the rest of the way in.

Yes, that was a bear putting the center stand on. I eventually settled on hooking up the springs first then using the leverage of the center stand to align the bolt hole and work the bolt through.
 
Tried installing 3 ways: spring on 1st, spring expansion tool, and using ratchet tie down to extend spring. 10 minute install either way.

All 3 work - the easiest was using a ratchet tie down to extend the spring.

1. With regard to Honda directions: No need to touch the exhaust - plenty of space to install the spring hook without loosening or removing the muffler bolts, washers, nuts.

2. all 3 ways I need a 2nd person. With the ratchet and spring extender - needed the 2nd person to hold the handlebars to keep the bike from moving backwards. When installing the springs before the center stand shaft, the 2nd person was necessary to hold the center stand back so the bar could extend through. I found this to be a little more difficult than installing the bar 1st and then simply stretching the spring into place.

3. Using the tie down ratchet ... I attached the spring to some inexpensive twine looped up 3x and tied around itself --- looped one end around the springs and the other around the hook of the tie-down ratchet --- I hooked the ratchet end to the bottom of the iron railing to my house --- three cranks of the ratchet and the springs snapped right into place on their own. I could also have attached the tie down to the wing arm and then I would not have needed the 2nd person.
