Like Keith Code said, there's a lot of information out there on riding; some of it is good. Suggest you get either Twist of the Wrist II or Sport Riding Techniques (by Nick Ienatsch) if you want good information on how to correctly use the brakes in conjunction with downshifts. Or just watch the Twist video on UTube (cheesy, but the braking sections have a very good review). Any of these are better than, well, opinions.
It is just like the joke about the guy going to the doctor. He told the doctor that his shoulder hurt when he lifted his arm way above his head. The doctor not to do that anymore. Same thing with riding a motorcycle.
