I am what is known around these parts as a B,O.I, That is born on the island in Galveston, Texas. On September 8th, 1900 my great grandfather became to first person to die in the line of duty in the U.S. Life Saving Service, that later became the U.S. Coast Guard. My great grand father jumped into the water trying to save his captain's wife, and they both drown. My grandmother flowed holding onto the side of a door that she had put her 11 month old sister on, for two days before she was pulled from the water.
On September 12th, 2008 hurricane Ike, hit Galveston island. Had it not been for the Galveston sea wall, the entire city would have been wiped off the map. Total damage was 25 billion dollars. The city stayed, but the oak trees were killed by rising salt water. The folks on the island turned some of these oak trees into the "Ike Trees".
