Bike Safe North Carolina

Bike Safe NC is a copy of the Bike Safe courses in the UK, watered down and compressed a little, but definitely worth the time. I have done two and both were a blast, well presented and I learned something both times.

The course is held by local police departements. There is some classroom time after which you are paired up with a motor officer and ride on a predetermined course on local roads, byways and highways. After debriefing over lunch and more class time you again go out with your assigned officer on a longer route and apply what you have learned.

The class was really good. Completely focused on getting you home safely after each ride. The day was split about half and half between classroom time and two observed rides. The classroom time was very informative. There were the expected pictures of fatal motorcycle accidents but, rather than just for shock value, there were also descriptions of the investigations into those accidents and observations of steps that could have been taken that would have helped avoid them. Everything was presented with real explanations from people who ride everyday as part of their job. The 2 rides were so they could first observe our riding habits. We came back and received critiques of things they thought could be improved with explanations on why they thought it would make us safer riders. The second ride was for us to put those changes into action. Overall it was a very good experience and it would definitely be helpful for those who haven't been riding for very long and will find it easier to break some of their bad habits before it becomes too ingrained into their riding style.
